We are going for a long weekend and arrive at newark airport at 11:00 am. I heard there is a express train to go direct to atlantic city. Do you know if there is a shuttle, train, bus to get us to atlantic city?

I've not heard of an express train; I heard you have to switch trains. I flew into Newark a few weeks ago, rented a car for less than $25 per day, and drove the two hours to Atlantic City. It was a lot easier.

Using the trip planner on njtransit.com they're suggesting taking a bus to NYC's Port Authority bus terminal and then another bus from there for $30/person.

the train does not run to AC from the airport. the train does not run down the coast that far, it stops at BayHead.
You have to catch the NE corridor line to trenton then take septa train to philly's 30th street station (not all the nj transit trains go to philly), then catch the train to AC from philly. [You could catch the amtrak that runs on the same line and the amtrak train will go all the way to the 30th st. station]
this could take you hours!
you really should rent a car, take NJTP south to exit 11 for the Garden State Parkway and about 1.5 to 2 hours later you are in AC.

Rent a car. For all the time and annoyance you'll save by taking public transportation detours through Philly or New York, it's worth every penny to have a car. Parking in AC ranges from free to cheap ($2 at many casino decks), plus you'll be able to go between the Borgata and the boardwalk casinos easily.
