New York Parking and Transportation

My wife, 4 year old son, 1 year old daughter and I plan to travel from Cincinnati to Philly via our family mini-van to visit family and then onto New York city for a Thursday-Sunday sightseeing trip. My question...

I know parking rates are very expensive and so I was wondering if anyone knows of a location, company, etc. that offers a park and ride (pay to park our car somewhere outside the city and take and use public transportation while in the city)? We do plan to drive back from New York City to Cincinnati, and so, taking a train from Philly to New York won't work for us.

Any quality suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Chris

Check this site - maybe you can find parking that's worth the price.

You might consider Weehawken/Port Imperial. There is long term parking there and you can catch the ferry directly across the river to mid-town.

You could try Newark airport, but the above Weehawken suggestion is much better. Certainly much closer.

You could find street parking in Riverdale (at the top of the Bronx) - usually there's plenty of space and it's easy to leave your car there for the weekend (with it being safe). From there you can catch the 1 train or the express bus into Manhattan.

If you want to take the express bus, park along Riverdale Avenue/Henry Hudson Parkway (or just off it) between W. 235th and W. 263rd. If you want to catch the 1, park just off of Broadway at around W. 242nd. My recommendation is to park near Manhattan College if you take the 1...

I wouldn;t want to take the subway in and out of Manhattan with 2 little kids, stroller plus luggage - just too much to manage up and down stairs and along passageways.

Agree Weehawken ferry/parking is a better choice.

Also - you can park on the street on the upper west side - just need to find the blocks that have street cleaning early Thurs am. Once that's done you can leave the car on a sidestreet there until Sunday anytime for free - and grab a cab to your hotel.

Note: you cannot park on the avenues, which are metered.

But the side streets that are cleaned Thurs am will not be cleaned again until the next week. Don't know the exact blocks (my street the cleaning is from 11:30 am to 1 pm - but some are from 9 am to 11:30 am) - so you can get there at about 11 and at the dot of 11:30 pull into a spot. Just be sure you read all signs carefully as to which days of the week on which side - and make sure you aren't in a spot that has other rules (a school or something). You can look in the lower 90's and upper 80's for the right time.

You don't say where your hotel is but a cab one way with all your stuff won;t be more than $20 to midtown.

Or, you could drop your wife, kids and stuff at the hotel and then go park the car and cab back.
