New Flows Opened
There are 5 or more surface flows coming from Pu'u O'o vent that are visible from the viewing area in Kalapana. It's been 3 months since surface flows have been visible. Anyone coming here soon is in for a treat!

I'm in transit on the way home from the Big Island. Two days ago we booked an airplane "sunset" tour of the volcano and in addition to seeing the surface flows, we were able to circle around the new eruption that is spurting lava approximately 100 feet into the air. This was amazing and even a little unnerving! There were pictures in today's newspaper about it. Our pilot had never seen anything like it.

From Hilo or Volcano, turn at Keaau and continue on this highway until the end of the road where you will see cars parked and a ranger trailer. Around 10 miles past Pahoa. Then another mile or 2 to the viewing area. Park as close as the county workers will let you.
I'm going out tomorrow night and will post an update Friday.

The viewing was spectacular last night! There was a bit of lava coming down the mountain but the ocean entry was awesome. Every couple of minutes the lava would shoot up 30-40 feet. Looked like a giant fireworks show. Definitely worth going if you'll be here soon!
