new england's foliage fesitvals and events
trying to decide when is the best weekend to visit : the 4-5 of oct. or 11-12 of oct.
both will have a lot of foliages festivals and events, so it is hard to decide.
also i plan to spend about 6-7 nights in the region so i am looking for two places to sleep ,probably one in vermont an the other in maine so i can visit as many atractions as possible.
please help me decide + recomendations about nice hotels ( 100-150 dolars for a double room )/is it wise to reserve now the hotels?
thanks oberman

Oberman,
It's kind of hard to say when the best weekend will be because I don't know where you want to be when. GENERALLY speaking the weekend of Oct 11-12 would probably be the closest to "peak" foliage (if you are in central New England ie: not up in Pittsburgh, NH and not down in Mystic CT) in other words, central NH or below. That weekend however is also I believe Columbus Day weekend which is HUGE!!! in this area for leaf peepers. I would definitely recommend making your reservations now! Toward the end of the summer you will be hard pressed to find anything for that weekend. I would recommend doing a web search for the accomodations that you want as there are SOOOO many B&Bs, motels, hotels etc. Depends on what you are looking for. I can personally recommend the Red Hill Inn in Center Harbor, NH (I got married there and it's beautiful) that's just one but keep looking and book something soon!

Six of one; half a dozen of the other. Grew up in New England and predicting the precise moment of peak foliage is an iffy proposition. You are assured whichever weekend you choose, you will see lovely colors and will have a great time. Personally I'd opt for the earlier weekend in October, especially as you'll be spending part of your time up in Vermont & Maine. ABSOLUTELY reserve your hotels now; for the more popular places you may already be too late.

I was brought up in Maine and I think the second weekend in October will be the best bet, but as others have said, it is impossible to actually predict the height of the foliage.
Once you decide on the area of Maine you want to stay, check out the Maine Innkeepers website at www.maineinns.com. You will find lots of lodging listed in almost every town. There are links to the individual property websites as well. A great lodging resource for Maine.
