Need to book hotel in New England now?
If we're planning on going to see the Fall colors in the end of september. Do we need to book it all now?? I think someone here advised me to book rooms in Vermont since it tends to be booked up. What other places do we need to book now?? We're planning on flying into Boston, go to Newport, RI, NH, CT, Maine, Cape Cod and Vermont. Not in that particular order since we have to figure out how to catch the foliage
But what rooms do you recommend us to book now? We're going on a budget and are going to stay in motel 6 along the way and maybe splurge on Cape Cod and on Golden Pond.
And we probably need to book our plane tickets now? I remember reading something about now renting a car in Boston because of high taxes? Is this true?!

Yes, you need to book rooms now.
No, you don't need to book airlines now.
If you are a member of AAA, get a copies of their two New England tour guides and use them to find lodging. They include far more budget lodging than guidebooks or sites like Priceline.

End of Sept is a little early. We stayed in Stowe VT the 3rd weekend in Sept one year and there was no color at all. Columbus Day weekend is usually a good weekend with foliage festivals around. Yes, I would book even the motel 6 kind of places. You might get lucky mid-week on a vacancy if you waited but keep in mind that even the locals are doing weekend getaways to see the leaves. Check flights and costs into MHT, Manchester NH or Providence RI. You might find car rentals even cheaper. I would aim for Squam Lake area (golden pond?) for first or 2nd weekend in October. It would be a good area to splurge since it's beautiful and much quieter than the tourist areas around the big lake (Winnipesaukee). You are right on the edge of the mountains so mid-week would be best so there is less traffic. Expect the North Conway area to be stop and go. Late on Sunday afternoon interstates 95 (Maine/NH/MA) and 93 (NH/MA) will be backed up with traffic because of toll booths. (Also Rt 89 from VT feeds into Rt 93 just north of the toll booth). The Cape, Newport and CT should be at the end of your trip. There can be a week or two difference in foliage but no color at all in late September except in marshy areas where the swamp maples color early.

Except for northern Maine, NH, Vermont, the end of September may be early for the foliage. Colors change first in the northeast and move south and west, usually last near water.
You will probably not have any problems booking along the coast of Maine or on Cape Cod, and may receive shoulder season rates.
For NH and VT, you should book forthwith, especially Golden Pond.
Consider flying in and out of Manchester, NH - check Southwest Airlines.
The AAA maps are excellent for scenic drives (the ........ routes) and the guides for moderately priced lodging not found in all the other tour guides.
Even so, booking for fall in foliage areas will be a challenge. Note that many have minimum stay requirements and note their cancellation policies.

if you haven't booked your flights yet you may want to look into flying into Providence,RI(PVD)or Manchester,NH(MHT). A lot less traffic and headaches. Southwest uses these airports. A nice place to stay in NH right down the street from Squam Lake(on golden pond)is the Inn at Mill Falls or one of it's sister properties located in Meredith(right on Lake Winnipasaukee)www.millfalls.com
Have a great trip and hope you enjoy our beautiful corner of the world
