Need some info into Raleigh area! Any Columbus transferees?
My family is looking into moving to the Raleigh metro area but have doubts about leaving our nice parks and moderate housing costs in the Columbus, OH area. We'll be visiting soon and could use recommendations on family-friendly neighborhoods near metro parks having wide trails for biking/running, where there are homes having .25 ac lot sizes, and most important, good elementary schools. Appreciate all views. Thanks.

Hi Sunkid26 - I have clients in Raleigh and CMH and find both towns to actually be similar (both have large state universities-OSU/NCSU). Being a lifelong resident of Raleigh I can assure you the family will love Raleigh as it is indeed a family-friendly city. Yes we have many parks here in the "City of Oaks", excellent schools and attractive neighborhhods. Our home values have remained strong recently due to the high number of people finding great jobs and quality of life here. While most think our local economy will soften in 2008, our housing marketing should continue to be pretty strong when compared to other parts of the country. What price range are considering?

I'm hoping we can find something under 250k, within a twenty minute of North Raleigh. My work commute will probably be before normal rush hour. We prefer established neighborhoods over tract home developements.
I hear there are plans to install tolls on the belt highway. Does anyone have knowledge of any website where I can find more information on this? Thanks again.

sunkid26, North Raleigh sounds like just the kind of area you're looking to buy a home in. You can find homes with a yard at that price level in some very nice older neighborhoods. The toll thing is just in the talking stages; nothing definitive yet ... could be years or never.

If you're an OSU alum, sorry for the loss to LSU. I was actually pulling for the Buckeyes. I agree with Elsiemoo's take on the Toll Road implementation. It's years down the road (sorry for the pun) if ever. I also agree there are many family-friendly neighborhoods in your price point near quality schools. If you want the definitive word on Toll Roads, the Wake.Gov.com site is a reliable source for up-to-the-minute news about Wake County roads. Another site is the local newspaper website Newsobserver.com site. If I were in your shoes, I'd request a Relocation package from one the area real estate agents. We partner several in the area if you need any assistance with a relo kit. It would help "paint" a clearer picture of N. Raleigh home prices and provide information about the area. Let me know if you need any assistance. Bobby

sunkid26 - On a hunch, I went ahead and placed a partner's website link in this post should you need information on homes for sale in Raleigh and area information. http://www.jimallen.com/form-relocation.php Plus, Jim has a blog you might want to checkout too http://www.jimallen.com/blog/

The cities are much the same and both have big universities and a hockey team. (sorry but ours is better). I got to this sportsbar (Skybox, North Raleigh Hilton) and by the look of all the OSU alum there, many people live here from Ohio. This is on any weekend and not just the National Championship. I know many people from Ohio/Columbus through work and they all seem to enjoy Raleigh/Triangle. I would not be to scared of toll roads, that is a big uncertain. Also, Raleigh has one of the oldest and most extensive Greenway projects that ties in many of the parks and since a Parks bond just passed, more parks and greenways are on the way. North Raleigh has numerous housing choices of any decade.
Here is a web site for Raleigh Greenways and also others in the Triangle

Here is a site for Raleigh parks just to start. Remember, this is only Raleigh and not Cary, RTP, Morrisville, Durham or Chapel Hill or other suburbs.

Thanks everyone for all your helpful information. Maybe I'm getting cold feet about moving!
Anybody hear about plans to expand the nuclear plant at Sharon Harris? Apex sounds like an affordable area, but the proximity to the nuclear plant keeps me second-guessing. Hope the water levels come back to normal soon.
With that thought, between Jordan Lake and Falls Lake, which one is cleaner and offers more recreation?

Here are neighborhoods in North Raleigh that you could do a search for-
Summerfield North
Stonehenge
Raintree
Northridge
Windsor Falls
Durant Trails
Bedford and Falls River are huge neighborhoods with lots of families, but the lots might be a little smaller.
I like www.fmrealty.com when searching for houses.
(No I don't work for them or have any affiliation to them)
There are plenty of parks for playing, running, biking, hiking, etc.
Lake Lynn, Shelley Lake, Blue Jay Point, Baileywick and Honeycutt are some local North Raleigh parks. All of these have trails to walk or run.

coldwar, more neighborhoods for you:
Springdale Estates
Springdale Gardens
These are right across from the excellent Leesville schools.
Also Quail Hollow ... these are older neighborhoods with lots of trees and most of the homes have large lots!

Well I went to the Univ of Florida so I'm an SEC girl of course but the nice thing is that Raleigh isn't an SEC town so I don't have to adopt an icky team like Tennessee.
I can always root for an ACC team that isn't FSU.
