I am trying to find out if you can take a larger fifthwheel on Route 66? We are in AZ now and leaving for Wisconsin on Tuesday. So we go the entire route from Arizona and then some! My husband looked at the turn by turn maps on the historic site 66 and says we can't do it. Our Rig is too long... (about 60 ft) too high... dirt roads etc. We both drive tractor trailers and have experience with big rigs, I would be so grateful for comments, I would love to take this route home, but if it is not a good idea, that is fine too; I just would like to know. You or anyone could post answers on my blog or directly to my email.

If your rig is too tall, it is too tall. No amount of driving expertise can make, for example, something that is 11' tall fit into an opening that is 10' tall. I would take those warnings seriously.
Well that would be a given! I said we knew how to drive tractor trailers, not perform magic acts! LOL.
Do you know if we would run into a lot of clearance problems? And are there optional routes and if so are they posted.
I would suggest that you join this group.

We drove Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica a few years ago. The vast majority of it is now swallowed by wide roads and highways. The best bits are in Arizona/New Mexico, with some smaller parts still drivable in other states. We spent a lot of our time (in a hire car not a big RV) on the service roads parallel to the highway - since this was still Rte 66.
Some places you will struggle, but for the most part it really is all tarmacked and multi lanes. You will not be able to access all of the remaining parts in such a big RV but the bulk of it is doable. Be prepared to divert if you need to though.
