I would say Newport. The mansions will be decorated for the holidays and you could spend a weekend just seeing them. Plus there is the cliff walk, Hammersmith Farm where Jackie Kennedy grew up, and a really cute town full of shops.

I thought that Mystic was nice but worthy of about half a day. Lots of little shops full of knick knacks.

Either one is going to be cold so bundle up!

I may be wrong but Hammersmith/Bouvier/Kennedy is no longer a tourist destination. The rest is wonderful!

Really not much going on in Mystic. Can go through seaport museum in an hour or two, and not much to do after that.

Only thing in Mystic in the wintertime are the casinos - Foxwoods & Mohegan Sun.

I'd go to Newport.

Is Newport pretty easy to get around in by car? I want to do a tour of the homes on the way to Cape Cod in May

Delawarean - On weekdays, even in May, you can drive around pretty easily. All the mansions have parking lots. It may be harder around the harbor, but still possible.

Weekends, you may want to park your car at the "Transport Center", just N. of the harbor. You can walk around the harbor area, and you can take the shuttle bus/trolleys to the mansions.

And don't forget to drive around Ocean Ave before or after. Beautiful drive around the peninsula, and go visit the Ft. Adams State Park, site of the Newport Folk and Jazz festivals.

I will agree with the other posters about choosing Newport over Mystic. There is so much more to do there. It's pretty easy to get around, just stop @ the visitor center @ the bus terminal downtown and grab a map. Definitely Ocean Drive, mansions, Cliffwalk (maybe not in Nov.-too cold), and last time I went (July), Hammersmith sign was gone, so I don't believe it's a tourist destination anymore. Lots of quaint shops, restaurants, etc.. Have fun!
