Missypie: Lexington, Concord, and Walden Pond Recommendation for Your Boston Trip
missypie - I've tried unsuccessfully to post this recommendation a couple of times for your upcoming Boston trip. Our kids are just a little older than yours and I'm just finishing up my trip report from our recent trip to Boston, but a real highlight for us was renting a car and driving out to Lexington, Concord (Old North Bridge)and especially taking a cool summer dip in pristine Walden Pond, which is a Massachusetts state reserve. For some reason, I was unable to post this message with internet links to pictures of this beautiful pond (we'd call it a small lake where I'm from), but just search for "Walden Pond" under Google images. Just a suggestion, but you guys might really enjoy this, especially if it's as hot as I expect it could be when you're there.

Thanks so much and thanks for topping! (I don't usually check the boards over the weekend.) We will be driving from Boston to Ogunquit, Maine, and someone suggested that we wait to visit Lexington and Concord on our way to Maine. For Lexington and Concord, did you park in one place and walk or take some kind of shuttle around, or did you park in several places?
I hadn't seriously considered swimming in Walden Pond. Our kids don't much care for lake swimming. Does it have a sandy bottom?
Thanks again for thinking of me!!!

There is a 90 minute bus tour you can take...I think it's www.libertyride.us. I've never been but I'm considering taking my inlaws in October.

It's better to drive around to the sights in Lexington and Concord (which are about 7 miles apart). But, unless you are really interested in specific sights or Revolutionary history, I'd recommend skipping both in favor of more time along the coast.

I expect you could spend a lot of time seeing the sites in and around Minute Man National Historic Park if you wanted. It took us only about 3 hours to stop at Lexington Green, swim at Walden Pond, and go to Old North Bridge in Concord. I think that would probably be enough to hit the highlights, although you could do a lot more in the area if you and your kids are up for it.
Walden Pond does have a sand swimming beach and the water is very clear, especially as you swim a little further out. It was a very nice remedy for the heat, although people told us you need to go before 10 or 11 a.m. to make sure you can find parking, which is limited. We got there about 10:45 a.m. and didn't have a problem with parking.
