Memorial Day weekend- Cape Cod?
Hello! Our anniversary falls right after Memorial Day weekend, and we'd like to take a trip from NYC. We're thinking of Cape Cod, but I'm wondering if it will be too crowded. Any thoughts or suggestions?
We don't have a particular plan...just looking for a nice weekend away (no more than 5 hours from NYC), not too expensive or overwhelmingly crowded. Thank you!

Memorial Day on the Cape is not very crowded- and that is usually because one is never sure of what the weather will be! It can alternate from cold, windy and rainy, to absolutely gorgous,warm and sunny.
That said, it is a wonderful time of the year to be here, without the crowds, and to savor the nooks and crannies, beach walks, dunetours in Provincetown, climbing the Lighthouses in Truro and Chatham, warming up with clam chowder or kale soup at the LandHo in Orleans-I would suggest you stay in a "busier" town, where there will be more things open, in case of inclement weather.
My choice would be Chatham. Wonderful Inns to stay, great restaurants and fun shopping in the village,. Day trips to the towns of Provincetown and Wellfleet, and the National Seashore are a must, if the weather is good.
Off season rates would be in effect, I would google Chatham, and see what you can find.Most are within walking distance of the village.

It will not be crowded. But, the weather is iffy. Could be 80, could be in the 30's with snow flurries. You just never know.
It's a terrific time to visit. Leaves on the trees, flowers in bloom, and ahead of the summer crowds, but most seasonal places (restaurants, shops...) will be open. If you shop accomodations, you may receive shoulder or even off season rates.
Have you considered the Berkshires?

Memorial Day is a great time to visit the Cape if you want to avoid crowds. Yes, the weather is unpredictable - I have pics from last year and on Saturday we were wearing jackets and jeans, and Sunday we were in shorts and flip flops - prepare to dress in layers.

By all means go! The important things to remember about the weather on Cape Cod is that it is never too predictable. We have never encountered snow in May on the Cape but we were there recently during a nor'easter...whew...what a wind! Actually we loved it because the waves were huge and there was a real excitement in the air. Of course it didn't hurt to be staying iat Fort HIll n a wonderful cottage with lots of light, fireplace and ocean views. Look for a place that you can be comfortable in even if the weather is not perfect...preferably someplace that is open all year so you will be guarenteed not to have a musty smell. We have found that some of the places that are just seasonal are fine if you just want ot sleep there but for an anniversary I would look for something a bit more up-scale

excellent advice has been offered. While early in the season I would add a word of caution about traffic. If you can avoid crossing the canal between 5 and 7 PM on friday as well as the 10am to noon slot on Saturday that would be great- on the return...t's all about weather, but generally late sunday afternoon can be slow.

Thanks so much! I can't wait to start planning our itinerary.
We ended up going the Priceline route for budget reasons, so we're staying at the Four Points Sheraton in Hyannis. I would have liked to stay in a small, "charming" town, but I think this will be a good location for our first trip.

I don't want to rain on your parade but there was a fire at the Four Points Sheraton today with significant damage. You might want to call the hotel directly to ensure that your reservation will be honored and that you will be away from any construction as they repair the damage.

There was NOT extensive damage....the fire was contained to a storage room, and some offices experienced water damage...there was NO damage or threat of damage to any guest area....you will be fine, don't worry.

Will you arrive on Friday? The Figawi starts at 9:00 on Saturday morning. It is one of the largest regattas on the East Coast. The sailboats can be viewed as they start the race and your hotel is about a mile from some vantage points. Don't miss Baxter's on Hyannis Harbor. You can sit outside and watch the ferry boats go by.

We, too, are going to be in Boston over Memorial Day weekend and are looking for a good day trip to the beach on Sunday. We were thinking of going to Woodmen's (sp?) for lobster in Gloucester at night, so a recommendation for a beach in that general area during the day would be appreciated.

We were there last month - I ordered the clam chowder (yum) and my DH ordered fish which came with chips.
Not fries! a bag of chips :-? Who would have thought?
If you want fries it appears that you you have to order them as an extra
My mother's favorite story about her visits to the US is the time that we were in a restaurant and she ordered Fish and Chips and was asked "Do you want fries with that?"
I could see her struggling to be polite and not laugh but ever the gentlewoman she said just replied "yes please"

BTW since you're in the area Coast Line Grille in Manchester-by-the-sea has wonderful food - don't be put off by the strip mall look.
I stumbled across the place while on a road trip with a girlfriend in 2005 and took DH there for an early dinner last month (after lunch at Woodman's) we had trouble choosing from the menu - too many choices.
They have renovated the place since I went in 2005
