MAUI RENTAL CAR
We are lucky enough to be spending 5 weeks in Maui this winter but I'm having difficulty getting a decent price on a convertible. As it is 5 weeks, we are looking for a 'deal' because even at $20 a day that is $700 & tax. I might just have to put my 'big girl panties' on and settle for a little economic sedan. Does anyone have any thoughts on whether it would be possible to get a convertible for that long for under $20 a day?

Why don't you just rent a convertible for a week and a compact the rest of the time? We found a compact to be really good as some of the roads are narrow and it was easy to park. Also, half the time it was so windy, I was honestly glad we didn't have a convertible.

Four years ago, I was on this forum and someone posted that they'd just got a convertible for |$14/day with Priceline so I tried it and got it so we were probably just very lucky. Last year we had to pay $18 though. I've been trying with priceline again but I'm not getting it - so my question was actually submitted because I was wondering whether anyone had got lucky like I did and whether I should keep persevering or not!

I booked our rental car for Feb 2011 on Maui not too long ago and managed to get an intermediate for $20/day through Enterprise. I was thrilled with that price - it's less than this past February's price.
Once thing you could try is booking a compact or something now, to drive for your first week or so, then shop one of the little independently owned places once you arrive - see if someone has one sitting on their lot not being used that you could negotiate a deal for.
There's a place in Lahaina (can't think of the name), right across from Cannery Mall, that might have what you want - never used them but they always have fun rides out front - Harleys, Mustangs, etc.

I think the place across from the Cannery mall is no longer there. If it's the same place I'm thinking about it always had a sports car sitting out front.
Across from the Cannery Mall is now a new shopping center with shops and a relocated Outback.
I'm with Austin Traveler. Just get a convertible for part of your stay.

The new shopping center across from Cannery Mall is great - we love that there's a Barnes & Noble there!
I just Googled the place I was thinking of and I think this might be it (closer to the Safeway end of Cannery Mall, across the highway ??):

You can rent a Lamborghini from them for $2,500 per day!
