MAUI OR KAUAI SUNSET SAIL?

WE've been on a Maui sunset sail 2 yrs ago and it was awesome. Since we will be in Kauai for 3 days prior to our 2 wks in Maui this yr, we're wondering if we should try a sail in Kauai or do one again in Kauai. Some of the messages I read seem to stress that the waters are quite rough in Kauai.
Any advice on the preferred island to do this and/or preferred companies?
Thanks again

Sorry - I reread my message and I meant 'do one again in Maui'

On our trip to HI in October, we went on a sunset cruise with Paragon Sunset Cruise – I booked this when we arrived in Maui. We had 2 nights that we could have taken it and I wanted to be sure that the weather would co-operate. I had found them online and liked the idea that they used motor only to get into and out of harbor, the rest of the time the catamaran was under sail. The drinks were plentiful and the first batch of mai-tais would have cleaned rust off a pipe! They weren’t as strong in subsequent rounds – by request. They served appetizers that were very tasty including: wings, sw type egg rolls & 1 more that escapes me at the moment and fruit platters. We met some really nice folks aboard and had a great sail. The sunset was blocked a bit by clouds. {Unfortunately, there was a lot of vog around the entire time we were in HI. I may be prejudiced, but the sunsets we have here in SW are nicer color wise -- except we don’t have the ocean to reflect the sunset.}

Hope this helps...

Thanks Debi for getting back to me. Like I said we had a wonderful time two yrs ago with the sunset sail we chose last yr but it's always nice to try something new (I have to say that 2 yrs ago every night we had the most beautiful sunset). Our daughter went last yr. and didn't really see one so I guess we were lucky!

Given normal weather patterns a sunset sail in Maui (south or west) will almost certainly be on calmer seas than Kauai. On Maui we've used Pacific Whale and on Kauai, Holoholo. Both good.

Hi:

on Maui we sailed on the Kiele V which leaves from the Kanapali Hyatt. This crew actually sails most of the time. We were at 14 knots or 15 knots most of the time. The sunset was gorgeous and we would certainly go with this crew again.

On Kaua'i I would recommend Holoholo Charters. They have this awesome 3 ½ hour sunset sail around to the Na Pali coast. They provide pupus like quiche, caesar salad, cookies, etc..., and it is an open bar with beer, wine, champagne, mai tais, etc... It starts a bit earlier than most cruises, like around 3:00pm-ish and they get back to pier once the sunsets. The water CAN get rough depending on the conditions that day, but the view is like totally unbelievable. If you would like to go on a cruise that has NO kids aboard, you may want to try their 2 hour dinner sail for adults only. It is really intimate and I enjoyed myself a lot. The capacity of the boat is 45, but the maximum that they will book is 35 so everyone has a lot of room.

As for Maui, I like Trilogy’s catamarans which depart from Ka’anapali. They are not crowded, provide juice & soda and yummy pupus but it is BYOB. I personally liked the BYOB since no boats have the liquor that I like anyway.

Hope you find one you like!
