Marriotts on Maui, Kauai, & Oahu

We have sufficient marriott points to stay at all three of these resorts for three weeks in August (no cost). I understand there is some construction at the Maui Marriott resort. We have a 1 BR villa at the timeshare property in Kauai and a Deluxe Oceanview at the JW Marriott Ihlinani in Oahu. Has anyone been to these resorts, and if so, do you have any advice or comments? We are golfers and plan to take our clubs. Also, any advice about a day-trip to Molokai or Lanai? Thanks in advance for your comments

I've been to both. Maui twice, Kauai once. They are different in that the Maui prop is in a more touristy area than is Kauai. Kauai and Maui are both nice hotels. Kauai is much nicer in my opinion. Gardens, flowers, animals...beautiful. So, what are you looking for? If you have specific questions you can email me and I'll try to help. It has been four years since I was there last so things have likely changed, but we loved both.

Just stayed at the Maui Marriott in Nov. It was before Thanksgiving and the place was pretty crowded though the other resorts along Kaanapali were virtually empty. I think it's because it's a timeshare and there will always be lots of families there. I imagine august will be a high occupancy time. They will start converting their regular rooms to timeshares soon. If you are staying in a regular room at that property you may be experiencing construction noise. If you are staying in the timeshare section you most likely will not be bothered by it as they are in two different wings. There are lots of positive things to say about the Marriott too though. The pool cafe is very good. Try the turkey on foccaca (sp?).

The Marriott on Kauai is very nice but the bay that it sits on is not as pretty as other areas. It's close to the harbor so you'd probably get to watch the cruise ships come in.

I'm thinking of booking a room at the Renaissance for "safety's sake" and (on Maui) and checking a couple of weeks before we go on the "construction" situation at the Maui Marriott....that way I'm covered (as long as I cancel one of them w/i 14 days. Thanks for the response

We went to the beach just next door to the Renaissance and really had a great time snorkeling. It was a great beach. Thought I'd liked to have stayed there instead. Good back-up idea.

I don't see if you are taking kids with you. If you are going with no kids I would definitely NOT stay at the Maui Marriott. We took kids and that's the only reason we stayed there. DH and I remarked that not in a million years would we want to stay at the Mariott if we did not have the kids.

NO KIDS! We're empty nesters, our last one graduates this May from college. So, we're not looking for "family" resorts this time around. (Hope that's not what we're getting)

We used Marriott points for our visit to Maui and Oahu. In Maui, we stayed at the Renaissance - which we LOVED. Especially if you're golfers (which my husband is...), there is a nice choice of golf courses nearby. On Oahu, we stayed at the regular Marriott - which was OK (not great - restaurants were not good at all.....) - but had a good location.

Candy, the Maui Marriott Ocean Club timeshare is totally family oriented. We went in November a week before the Thanksgiving week when school was still in session. Many families just like us took kids out of school to take this trip. Like I said in an earlier post, the other resorts along Kaanapali were quite empty at the time but the Marriott was very busy. This resort caters to families. Part of the pool is devoted to the very young with a Pirate Ship water feature. The Pirate Ship is not designed for the older child either. I'd say age 6 tops though older kids will use it. If you're not looking for a family vacation you might look elsewhere.

We did see couples, both older, middle and newlyweds and they all looked like they were enjoying themselves. Guess you just can't beat being in Maui!!!! Unless you go to Kauai ; )

So has anyone tried out the makapu beach club at the Renaissance? I hear they have "their own pool" and are closer to the beach. The room also includes a buffett breakfast. Is the extra cost worth it?
