Hi,

Does anyone know the best way to find a well-maintained Manhattan apartment that is furnished for a 4 month sublet beginning February 1st? I don't want to pay broker for such a short time. I have such good luck with advice for our global travels on Fodor's and hope that someone will have a good idea.

You can try Craig's list - but many of the apt's there are scams - so you would need to have someone local check it out for you.

If you have the funds go to one of the corporate housing apartment houses - not inexpensive, but relialbe and legal.

You might try the various uiversities - for faculty or grad students that will not be in school that semester.

Also - if you give us a budget and what you are looking for - studio or one-bedroom - people may have specific suggestions.

Worldwide Plaza at 350 west 50th st. is a condominium that I believe allows monthly rentals. You may be able to find something on vrbo.com there from an owner or you may be able to contact building mgmt. who may rent w/o a fee.

There are also many Oakwood corporate apartments in NYC these days, and that might also be an option for you if you can afford it.

Some of the Affinia Hotels will rent out their rooms (some with real kitchens) at monthly rates, but they aren't cheap, though February is the best time to try to find one of these. A friend stayed for a few months at the Shelburne while his apartment was being renovated. Just beware that some of the "studios" are really just rooms with a microwave and fridge, not a real apartment.

People in NYC do sublet all the time, so there are always apartments available, but it's very difficult to find a legitimate place to stay and hard to know what's a scam and what isn't if you're not going through a broker.

Oakwood.com will charge a broker fee. Bridgestreet.com is a similar co. and I think they also charge a fee.

There is also furnishedquarters.com I don't know if there are any fees associated with them.

What size apt are you looking for and what is your budget? Are there any neighborhood preferences?

Oakwood both owns and operates its apartments, so I"m not understanding why there might be a fee. But I do know they are fairly expensive and aimed at business renters who are in town for a few months.
