Hi,

We are planning a last minute trip to ME, arriving Portland on Saturday, June 8th and leaving from Bangor on the 18th.

Does anyone have any information on this year's black fly season? Maine Nature News reports and map seem to suggest that there is not much activity right now which might mean misery by the time we are biking in Acadia around the 14th. Can anyone provide some current information?

I need to buy these flights today, if we are going to go for it.

I know every year is different -- we were there last year mid June and had no problem with the black flies.

Mosquitoes and black flies don't bother you while you're moving (biking), just don't stop too often to smell the roses. And eat a lot of garlic, use Listerine and dab some around your outer ears. (They are attracted to your earwax). and don't use natural fruity-fresh shampoos and soaps.

Here in central New Hampshire it seems to be a fairly typical year, not awful, but they are definitely out there!

Not a big deal at all. Don't let them change or influence your travel plans. I live in Maine and have never let them interfere with any outside plans.

I'm staying right next to the water on Westport Island right now, down the peninsula from Wiscasset. No black flies or mosquitoes to speak of. But things could change with this 80 degree weather we're having right now!
