MA foliage report

On Wed. and Thurs. I drove across the entire state of MA on the turnpike and then on to Rockport. To be honest, the color was modest. There are some pockets of color along the highway, but it is certainly not "peak". Very little color in the Glouster/Rockport area. However, the weather forecast for the weekend is great and it will be beautiful anyway. (Lots of color in the Albany area right now!)

LOJO, is that the *Mohawk Trail* that you've just driven? We'll be coming up next week to the area ... Thanks!

The Mass Pike is not the Mohawk Trail. The Mohawk trail is about 30 miles north of the pike and higher elevation so foliage there should be decent.

I drove this week from 20 miles north of Boston 70 miles north into NH. Color was also "modest". Drove yesterday on Rte 495 to Worcester (50 miles west of Boston, a little hilly). Color was a little better. Even locally color is not outstanding, but there is still lots of green waiting to turn.

I think it is an OK year but some trees are starting to lose leaves without doing much else spectacular. In past years they have referenced drought as cause of this, but we have had enough rain this summer/fall.

Just a little more info re: the road names: The pike, turnpike or Mass Pike refers to the Massachusetts Turnpike which is Interstate 90. It is the fastest route across the state with traffic moving at 70 to 80 mph. The Mohawk Trail is the portion of Rt. 2 west of Greenfield. It is more scenic and much slower especially if you get behind a truck, as there are limited areas to pass, but I would say it is the preferrable route for leaf peeping!
