LOLO MOTORWAY
Planning on driving the Lolo Motorway in Idaho/Montana in July 2006. Anyone ever driven it? I can only find bits and pieces of information on the actual road. Is it one way? Is there steep dropoffs or does it follow the ridgeline? Some info says parts are extemely narrow. Can an H2 fit through ok? Any help is appreciated.

We drive it at least four or five times a year and have since I was a baby. (It's how we get to my grandparents home in Idaho).
Hwy 12 is 76 miles of paved, winding highway. It's two lanes. It follows the Lochsa river and there are some steep dropoffs, but primarily you're driving along the river.
It's a busy road in the summer with lots of semi trucks and campers and motorhomes. There are a few passing lanes and a lot of slow vehicle turnouts. Speed limit is 50 mph.
It's a good road, and the scenery is beautiful. But it takes a while to drive. Where are you headed?

This may give you a starting point for information you wanted on the Lolo Motorway (FS Road 500). Hope you are up for 100 miles of "four wheeling fun".
You can also go the National Forest Service site (www.fs.us.fed) and search the Clearwater National Forest. That may also help. Hope this is of some help..

No, don't have the equipment to make the trip on the Motorway. Several years ago Popular Mechanic had a series of articles on the Lewis & Clark Trail across this great land of ours. This was a part of it. If you would like you can go their site and do a site search of trip, it is interesting reading. They used ATV's for that part of their trip. I have been on US-93 several times but never turned to the west at Lolo on US-12 for this part of the L&W journey. We have followed most of the Lewis and Clark Tr from Hanford IL to Fort Clatsop OR. One of these days hope to get around to this part as well....
