LAX to Hyatt West Hollywood, Sunset Boulevard

For the first leg of our honeymoon in June next year, we're flying to LAX from England. We land at about 7.30pm and will be really tired from the flight and wedding. How much would a taxi cost from LAX to the Hyatt West Hollywood on Sunset Boulevard, roughly.

We're going to get a hire car the next day as we're staying in LA for 4 nights. Is it best to prebook the car before we fly or just to pick one up from Budget when we get to LA?

Thank you so much, in advance, for your help.

Jules

Jules,

travelling from Germany into the U.S. it has been my experience that it is considerably cheaper to pre-book the rental car.
What makes it very appealing, too, is that booking through a tour operator (not a package, just the car) I get additional LDW and increased liability insurance along with other perks included in the rate, which you would have to pay extra for renting in the U.S.
What's more, I would seriously consider picking the car up upon your arrival. The Hyatt West Hollywood is not exactly close to the airport and I would expect a taxi to be quite expensive. Even though you would have to pay for overnight parking, it might turn out to be a deal renting the car for one more day.

I'm unclear where you will be picking up a rental car the next day. Why not just pick one up (pre-reserved, of course) upon arrival at LAX? The cost of taxi will probably be more than an additional day of car rental! And it is easy to drive to Hyatt -- hard to get lost!!

That's my thought too, why not pick up the rental car at LAX?

It will cost, roughly, around $35.00, plus tip. I'd go for the airport to hotel shuttle instead.

Ordinarily I would agree with Patrick and say rent the car when you arrive. But you'll be 11 hours on the plane, and if this is your first experience driving on the right side of the street, you will probably be too tired to figure out right-side L.A. driving, much less how to get to your hotel in one piece. We'll be on daylight saving's time then, so it will still be light out (until 8:30 p.m.)

You could also get a limo service to the airport, which might be more fun, especially on the first leg of a honeymoon.

I'd prebook the car -- which one do you plan to pick it up at?

Surfergirl - you hit the nail on the head! It'll the first time my fiance has driven on the "wrong side of the road" and we're both going to be absolutely worn out after the long 11.5 hour flight and all the manic days leading up to the wedding. I don't want him driving to the hotel for safety's sake.

I hadn't thought about a shuttle bus - will email the hotel and ask if they provide one. If not the taxi doesn't sound too bad (we've got good exchange rates at the moment!). We'll look into the limo cost too.

Thank you for the advice about prebooking the car. I don't know which depot we'd collect from - will have to look into it once we've found out which tour operator to book one through.

Thank you all.
