Last minute questions about my Hawaii Trip

Hi Guys
I'm leaving Tuesday and I spent most of today getting some sort of schedule set for things to do while I'm in Honolulu.

I plan to buy the $20 "The Bus" pass for 4 days and have a couple of questions about it's stops:

1. Is it possible to visit Diamond Head Summit and National Cemetary of the Pacific in the same route?

2. Is it possible to visit the Aloha Flea Market, Dole Pineapple Plantation, then travel to the North Shore and then visit the Polynesian Cultural Center in 1 pass? Will I need a really early start to accomplish this?

1. I'm not positive, but it doesn't look like it. This is a link to details on how to take the bus to Punchbowl:

2. No idea, but that sounds like a very long day using The Bus. You'd be better off renting a car for the day if that's an option.

I love The Bus to get around Waikiki and Honolulu. But I think it is less practical to try to see the entire island (perhaps not even possible; see website mentioned above). Could you rent a car for 1 day? If not, I would consider one of the day tours (Roberts or someone) to more efficiently get you to all those locations.

1)Depending where you start..Diamond head is east of Waikiki, and Punchbowl Nat Cemetery is to the west.

2) The circle island bus trip takes about 4 hours of traveling time. Unless you are very lucky, you're probably looking a 6 hours if you add on "waiting at the bus stop" time.

Add in an hour for the swap meet, 45 minutes for Dole, and 4 hours minimum at PCC, and you've got a really long day without even stopping to see the beaches of the north shore.

Personally, I'd skip Dole, stopping at Waimea Bay and in Haleiwa town instead, and save PCC for another day OR do all the north shore stuff without going to the swap meet that same day.

Better to do Pearl Harbor and the swap meet one morning(they're in the same general area), then come back to Diamond head in the afternoon. Next day, visit the north shore.

I agree with Suze if you have time The Bus is great for in town like Aloha Tower etc. For the rest of the island if you really don't want to rent a car I'd do tours. We haven't been to the plantation yet however their Dolewhip icecream does sound inviting. Something else you can do with a rental car on the north shore is go to Dillingham Field and either go skydiving or take a sailplane (glider) ride. While you can do either almost anywhere you won't see the scenery too many places. Shop around you should be able to get a compact fairly cheap.

PCC is best if you have an entire day. 12:30pm - 9:15pm when 'Horizons' is over.

By bus, it takes more than 2 hours each way.

If you have a car, you can stop at Dole Pineapple & a couple of North Shore beaches on the way.

Dole Pineapple is not worth stopping at from a bus.

Rent a car the entire time & get out & see the island.

"1. Is it possible to visit Diamond Head Summit and National Cemetary of the Pacific in the same route?"

Not on the same route, but you can take a bus from Diamond Head to Punchbowl. Probably take 1 1/2 hours - 2 hours.

Keep in mind that taking a bus to many places like Punchbowl, Diamond Head will add a lot of time to visit those places.

Example:

Diamond Head

5 minutes by car & you can drive into the crater & park right at the trailhead. Takes 1 hour to hike to the top & back. Then 5 minutes back to Waikiki.

Takes 30 minutes by bus to Diamond Head plus any waiting time for the bus. They drop you off outside of the crater adding another 1/2 mile each way to the hike, about 30 minutes more total. 30 minutes back to Waikiki plus any waiting time for the bus.

Same for Punchbowl - They drop you off outside of the crater adding at least an hour, more like two hours to the visit inside of the crater.

Punchbowl is pretty big. It takes only a few minutes to drive around inside Punchbowl. At least an hour of walking if you want to see much of the Cemetery.

You can drive to Pearl Harbor in 25 minutes from Waikiki.

1 hour 15 minutes by bus plus waiting time.

Forget the bus & rent a car.

I cant help with your questions but would like to offer last minute advice:

Respect the power of the ocean and always use EXTREME caution.

Have a great trip!

Or maybe what always happens to me will happen to you... once I arrive in Hawaii I find myself crossing off all kinds of ideas on my list of "must dos" to instead enjoy the beach, and walking around in Waikiki, watching sunset, having some nice meals, and relaxing like that.
