Glad to hear you'll be visiting beautiful Lake Lure!
I was there once about seven years ago, and remember
it like it was yesterday. We stayed at the Fairfield Mountains Resort, and mostly ate dinner at our timeshare condo, since there isn't too much around in the way of restaurants. The one place we did go to eat was the Esmerelda Inn, near Chimney Rock...it was great!! A more dressy evening. We hiked for a day in Chimney Rock Park, which has the most gorgeous waterfall that you can hike to the top of. Not too strenuous, but a great day's workout. Also, it's fun to just hang out on Lake Lure, rent a boat and paddle around, take a horseback ride on the mountain trails, just generally commune with nature and your friends. October should be the perfect time of year to catch some beautiful fall foliage. I hear Ashville, NC is a nice place to visit too, maybe a day trip? Have a great time at Lake Lure! If you have any more questions you can e-mail me.

Hi Britts! Welcome! We were at Lake Lure, (Fairfield Resort ) in the summer. It was too hot. The Resort is lovely, especially the lake, they have indoor heated swimming pool., a beach , great golf course. However, I don'tknow what they have in the Fall. The leaves should be gorgeous. The nicest part is that you are in the Blue Ridge Mountains. You can ride for many miles on top of the mountains with beautiful views. The foliage is magnifent. One caution. YOu will need a car. Lake Lure is surrounded by mountains with no way out except all around the mountains. It is about 1 hour( or less) to Ashville. Ashville has a magnificent castle to visit. Don;t miss it. Also the two of Brevard is not only quaint and worth a visit, but it is a music center. Have a good trip.

Jackie,
I just happened to come across your post and Jane's mention of Brevard. I live in Brevard. The music center here is summer only. It closes around the second week in August. It would be worth your time to enjoy if you were going to be here when it's in session. I don't know much about Lake Lure--just that I've been through there a time or 2. It's pretty, but the hills around it kind of give me the feeling of being closed in. There's plenty of beautiful scenery around here to see. Asheville is our *big* city. It's about an hour's drive from Lake Lure going northwest. Brevard is about an hour and a half due west. Brevard is bordered by the Pisgah National Forest which has numerous hiking trails and beautiful waterfalls. Driving west, through the forest for about 30 min, you can access the Blue Ridge Parkway which runs from Georgia north to New Hampshire along the spine of the Appalachian Mountains. It's a national treasure. At Cherokee, which is about 2 hours south of Brevard on the Parkway, you can visit the Cherokee Indian Reservation. You definitely need reservations around here in October because of the leaf tourists who come to see the colorful trees and mountains. If you'd like me to elaborate more about this part of the country you can write me an e-mail and I'd be happy to help.

Ashville is home to the Biltmore Estate--it is worth the trip!!! The house is awesome, and understand there is a behind the scenes tour to take--take it too, had friends that did. There is a winery there, and we ate at a beautiful little place on the estate grounds--grand buffet, I think Plan on a pretty full day. When we went we could get tape players and then wander around per instructions on the tape that tells you all the info on the house.

We are taking a delayed honeymoon/first anniversary trip to NC: flying into Asheville, renting a car and ending in Raleigh/Durham, with a possible
quick stop in Chapel Hill. We would like to do a waterfall tour, rafting a train ride. The logistics of it are becoming a bit overwhelming. I'm not sure if it is best to stay in Asheville and drive to each of the locations or to try to stay closer to
each activity/side trip. Any suggestions?

We stayed at the Lake Lure hotel - too old for our tastes. Drive to Cashiers and Highlands if there is time. We like to stay at a B&B in Cashiers, the Millstone Inn. We also enjoyed the train ride roundtrip from Bryson City - that should be awesome that time of year. We also ate at the Esmerelda.
