Its really a diverse mix- there are antique shops, national chains, unique and eclectic shops-even an outlet or 2. I walk the street every time I'm in town-I think its the only shopping district of its kind. Each type of shop has something to offer. Ex: I always enjoy one store that specializes in old maps, and M. Dumas is the ONLY menswear store my DH will walk into willingly. (caveat: he went to the Citadel)
And I hate to admit it, but I do stop into "some" of the national stores, b/c I find they often have bargains, not sure why...I never know which shops will be there when I arrive b/c the mix seems to change each year, with more chains moving in.
If you want art galleries, go the the intersection of State St.& Queen St. At that intersecton there are 3 galleries that I particularily enjoy. (Horton Hayes is my fave, but Smith Killian represents more diverse artists).
Plus, the Straw Market/Market St. shops are just a few steps away, adding yet another assortment of unique shopping options!

Oh yes...Bob Ellis Shoes.
When we lived in Savannah, which was lacking in good mens (or womens) stores, my husband would buy all his clothes for work...suits, slacks, sports coats etc from AJ Davis. Great mens store! They knew his name on repeat trips...am sure they had to look it up somewhere after seeing him, but that's the sort of service they offer. Find that at Macy's! LOL
Lots of antique shops all along King...furniture, estate jewelry, art.
After being shopping deprived in Savannah, I'd almost drool as we neared Charleston.

One of my favorite stores on King Street is Handpicked. They have all sorts of relatively inexpensive jewelry, most of it sterling silver. It is a small chain, with a couple of stores scattered around SC. They make their own jewelry and I've gotten several pairs of earrings and bracelets there that other people constantly compliment.
