Kauai bar and grill or brewpubs
While my wife is in Scotland with her sisters, I'll be on Kauai and I'm looking for casual places which have decent food (burgers, other sandwiches. possibly salads or appetizers) and good beer (Hawaiian or other microbrews). North shore would be preferable, but I would go as far toward the south as Kapa'a. Any ideas?

Well, there's a microbrewery in Port Allen (Kauai Island), but that's a long drive from the North Shore. The Big Island and Oahu have Kona Brewing, Oahu has The Yardhouse, and Maui has Maui brewing, but beer is woefully under-represented on Kauai.
The Living Room at the Princeville Hotel has a good, but expensive, beer list. The view is phenomena, and the appetizers are good, but it wll cost you (and isnt super casual). Might be worth a stop regardless.
In Hanalei, try The Hanalei Gourmet or Tahiti Nui. I also really like Bar Acuda (fabulous tapas).
Honestly, go with low expectations for beer selection, and you migt not be disappointed.

I recently came across this article. It's from 2008 so who know if these places are still around.

Unfortunately the one in Port Allen is the only brewery I know of, it just recently opened. There used to be a place above the Marriott in Lihue on the road to the golf course but it has been closed for a few years.

Your answers sort of confirm what I thought and it seems like I may be out of luck. But I'm sure I won't starve or be unable to find beer. Lookin, I also really enjoy Big Swell. Really hoppy. Maybe I'll just pick up a six pack, turn on a ballgame and pretend I am at a Brewpub! And thanks for the other tips, everyone. I am definitely going to Bar Acuda one time and I've been to Tahiti Nui before. 19 days until I go!

If you're up for a roadrip - I think this is the old Waimea Brewing location

Thanks for the additional info, Lookin. That's a pretty good distance from Princeville, where I'm staying, but maybe I'll do it once. I would definitely be thirsty by the time I get there!

Try The Tavern at The Princeville Golf Course. Excellent burger, cold beer and fantastic views. A "Roy's" venture. If it's the same cook, he used to have a resto in New Orleans.
Not a brewpub per se but Olympic Cafe in Kapaa. Cold beer (hellava Bloody Mary) decent comfort view. Watch the hustle bustle of "Downtown Kapaa" from above as it's located upstairs.
Not too much on ambiance but I like Rob's Goodtimes Grill in Lihue. Suprisingly good food, cold beer and a lotta TV if you like sports.
