Just Back from Williamsburg
I just returned from visiting my daughter in the Army in Virginia. Even with the gas prices, I was shocked to see NO traffic throughout Memorial Day weekend. We drove from North Florida to Virginia in 10 hours. Luckily my husband and I, being military retirees, were given free admission to Busch Gardens and Colonial Williamsburg in honor of the holiday, which we really appreciated!
The weather was absolutely spectacular and we enjoyed the German food at Busch Gardens and I made it thru one roller coaster but that was it for me. While in Colonial Williamsburg, we walked to Blue Talon Bistro for lunch and enjoyed it very much. Many people are unaware that you can walk all over CW for free; only the shuttle busses and the buildings require the admission fee. We only went in three or four buildings so I would have been fine without the admission pass - something to think about if you want to see CW but don't want to pay $37 and up.
Anyway, we had a great time and it made me remember how much I love Virgina.

Hats off to Busch Gardens for opening the park with free admission to Military and Military retirees!
Its a lovely theme park and has fun things to do for all ages. My daughter likes the paint your own pottery more than the coasters, my son loves the coasters, and my husband likes the shows. I like all of it, especially the flower plantings and landscaping.
There is a good cheese shop/sandwich place in Williamsburg, between Colonial Williamsburg and the College of William and Mary. I recommend it when you return.

I forgot to mention that I drove up to Fredricksburg to meet an old Army friend and happened to find a really good little restaurant there called Poppy Hill Tuscan. It's a basement restaurant and the food and prices are very good. Excellent Sunday brunch!

Glad you had a good weekend, Postal! Your note about being able to walk around CW for free is a very good point--we used to do that all the time when we lived in Newport News.
Re: Memorial Day traffic, we noticed Amelia Island (near Jacksonville, FL) seemed underpopulated for a holiday weekend, and I have heard from two separate people that traffic between Tampa and Orlando and near WDW was lighter than usual by far. Those pesky gas prices...

Actually, I do feel there is ONE good result of the prohibitive gas prices. Here in Florida, people who used to spend their weekends going here and there are now realizing staying home with the family and barbecuing is actually fun, too!
