imperial palace thoughts

is 35/nite still too much to pay for this mid strip hotel/ casino, have read very mixed and sometimes awful reviews(noise dirty bad elevators)..thinking that the gold coast off strip w. its shuttle to barbary coast for 40/nite, mite be a better value for a place for two guys to crash occaisionally during a three day mid week vegas binge...thoughts?

That's a tough call between Gold Coast (VERY inconvenient to be off the strip) and Imperial Palace which is not a nice hotel, but is cheap and pretty well located. If you're really not picky about room quality, I think the Strip location is more important. Half the fun of LV is being on the Strip and being able to walk out your hotel door and wander around to the other hotels/casinos.
Have you checked rates at places like Aladdin, Flamingo and Harrah's? The hotel websites often have special prices. What dates are you looking at?

IP is truly a dump. $35 a night is too much for this hole. If you can get a deal for Harrah's, grab it. The Flamingo is another possibility.... Isn't April usually a big convention month in Vegas?

I've stayed at the IP several times over a 10 year period. It's certainly not fancy, but I've never had a room that wasn't clean. The location on the strip is a definite plus and more than makes up for the basic room.

The biggest drawback for me is the long check-in lines and having to wait forever for an elevator.

When we visit Vegas, we don't spend a whole lot of time in the room, so it's never been big deal. I'd certainly pay $35 for a room at the IP, but no way would I pay their $99 weekend rate.

If you have a car, keep in mind that it's quite a walk from the hotel to the parking garage.

We'll be in Vegas next month and we're staying off strip for the first time. We'll have a car though.

I agree with the "IP is a dump" parade of comments. I have a much nicer alternative at the San Remo... Its next to the Tropicanna and across the street from the MGM... just a short walk to NYNY and Excalibur... At that corner are the Monorail down the strip and the moving walkways to Luxor and beyond. Good Location, clean hotel, and last I checked around $35 a night...

couldnt get remo for less than 80, where did you see 35? think cancelling imperial is in line based on responses here and other posts...will check remo again...excalibur quoted 59/ nite if i book online, harrahs wants 100/nite (can you believe?) i have 40/ nite at gold coast..maybe worth the walk or extra cash for cabs...unless someone can tell me that san remo is that much better (besides convinience) and can tell me how to get a good deal there or trop or somewhere else (apr 12-15 mon-thurs) thanks again

I was going to say, if you do decide on the IP and have any plan to sleep before say 2 in the morning, don't get a room facing the Strip. The Harrah's Carnival Court nightclub is right below the hotel. Never stayed at the IP but have gone to see the Legendary Cook E. Jarr at the Carnival Court.

I know it's cheesy and there's kids, but if it were me, I'd still go for the Excalibur if it's only $20 more than Gold Coast. The rooms there are basic and have been clean when I've had to stay there. However, I'm a total "stay on the strip" priority person, so you can take that into consideration. But I'm staying at the San Remo next weekend (crazy weekend -- everything's sold out or $250), so I'll let you know how my stay is...

stayed at the ExC about 5 years ago, not bad, was as clean as any standard sheraton or marriot around the country...i just want the place to be clean, and rreading postings about dirty rooms and moldy bathrooms are a real turn-off to a vacation, even if the room is just to be used as a place to flop and clean-up...

what are the thoughts on places voted most likely to invite the lower-roller back , comp-wise..?? -GCoast, S-Remo or ExC...??

sbrownpac -- sorry for the delay, but here's my follow-up about the San Remo. No problems at check-in, room was clean (although shower curtain and towels were flimsy) and the general atmosphere was energetic. Not impressed with hot water pressure, however, and even lost hot water completely for a few minutes the 2nd morning. But that was a one-time occurrence, so hopefully it's not a typical thing. My biggest concern had been location, but it was an easy walk across the street to MGM. From there we also walked over to NY NY (however, please know that I'm a big walker, so it's not usually a problem anyway. And we did also have a car and used it on the first night to park at Mirage and hang out more at that end of the strip.) The sports book is pretty sad, but the convenience store is open 24 hours, which is helpful. I'd consider it a good value if you can get it at a similar price to an off-strip hotel. I still prefer more central locations, but that's just my own Vegas bias And while I would normally never spend the $150 that I did for San Remo, considering Bally's, Paris and Mandalay Bay (my usual places) were $400 and even Excalibur was $250 that same weekend, I was happy overall with my stay.
