Honeymooning in the mountains, NC

Me and my soon-to-be husband will be traveling throughout the mountains of NC mainly Boone, Asheville, and Brevard in late August. We've got Asheville covered, but would like to know some things to do and see in Boone and Brevard. We're mainly interested in doing some laid-back relaxing sightseeing, maybe some rafting and such. Also, if there are any other towns we should visit we're completely open to suggestions! We're also debating a week at the beach after our week in the mountains, but are concerned with the prices of hotels there. Any suggestions on that will be greatly appreciated as well! Thank you so much!

Late August could be a bargain time--school is in by mid-August and the crowds are gone, to some extent. There are places at all levels.
Look at Litchfield Beach and Golf Resort in Pawley's Island and see what their prices look like. They have every level of lodging from rooms to condos. And a lovely place.

Check out Todd - particularly for the rafting bit - http://www.toddgeneralstore.com/ http://www.rivergirlfishing.com/ http://toddscalendar.com/
They also typcially have music & such right in town by the creek most Saturdays in the Summertime.
Keep in mind Boone is a college town, you may want to steer clear if App. St. is back in session, or it is a football Saturday.

Since you will be in Asheville then I would suggest going into The Great Smoky Mountains and Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg areas. There is a ton of things to do there. Also Cherokee,NC is a nice little town to check out and has Harrahs casino. I would also drive some on the Blue Ridge Pkwy. Heres some links that might help you and you can request to have info sent to you.

Please be advised (& consider the source of the post) Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge are (IMHO)are examples of Mts. gone wrong, way wrong. However, if you like kitschy 'junk' stores w/crap made in China, massive over development, concrete & wall to wall people & well, even more people, that may well be your place.

SanParis has it exactly right. A Tennessee friend calls Pigeon Forge a wart on the state of Tennessee. Of course, Gatlinburg couldn't help itself, being THE place in the mountains from the old days. I actually went to camp near there when the ONLY place to stay was the Gatlinburg Inn.

I agree with SanParis and Gretchen. I avoid Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Cherokee as much as possible.

I just did a search to see what's out here on Brevard. I spent some time in Brevard this week and I was enchanted.

IMO it is far less pretentious than Highland and/or Cashiers with gorgeous scenery and as much to do inside as out.

I highly recommend the Hobnob restaurant. We dined outside last night and the air/evening was a glorious as the food.

I cant think of the name of it but there is a coffee roaster in Brevard that is excellent. Have fun on your trip.

Where are you from? Are you driving or flying into NC?

Without knowing more, my suggestion to linking a beach trip to a trip to Asheville is to catch the interstate all the way to Charleston SC. If you have the money Wild Dunes at Isle of Palms is excellent but IoP has other hotels.
