Highline walk - where to start near Penn Station

Hello all- I am coming into the city by the Long Island RR and would like to start the walk around 30th street. I'm not sure where exactly the walk starts. Is it 30th Street? 34th Street? And 11th Avenue or 12th Avenue? i don't want to wander around especially if it is hot. How long is this walk?
Thanks in advance for all your help!

You can access The Highline at West 30th Street. Look at the website for more info. www.thehighline.org

Just to be clear, it's not a mile to the entry for the Highline, but rather the length of it. The entry is, I believe, very near 30th Street/10th Avenue, but I haven't been on the new northernmost spur yet. If you walk down to 30th and then turn west, you will see the Highline as you approach. You really can't miss it.

For me, the upper part is nowhere as interesting and compelling as the first sections. Except for the vista of the train yards it is claustrophobic and aesthetically lacking.

I agree that the original part is better so make sure you walk to the end.

And on your way back, say hello to all of the Tom Otterness Sculptures in the 14th St/8th Ave subway station.
