BWI car rental expensive

I am checking car rentals from BWI for 8/6-8/11/14 and the cheapest I can find is $449 for economy. Will the prices come down? That rate is shockingly high. Do any of you Fodorites have any suggestions to find cheaper rental rates? We will be traveling many hours outside of MD so public transportation is not an option.

Although we haven't used it at BWI, we've had very good luck with Priceline at many other locations.

Many hours outside MD has to be closer to a different airport that might have cheaper prices.
If you have to fly to BWI, you could take the short ride to downtown Baltimore for a cheaper rate than an airport.
Did you try a reasonable bid on Hotwire?

How long is the rental for?

Agree to check Priceline - or can you use any sort of CC or airline program points?

High season--last week before school starts.
Will the rates come down--not likely.
Hotwire another possibility. But quickly.

If you're arriving during daylight hours, take the $40 taxi ride to the Avis in Glen Burnie, you'll save $200 on the rental and it's about 15 minutes (which is not much longer than it will take you to get to the airport pickup counter).

You can book the car to return to BWI, so that your taxi fare is only one-way.
