Hershey Park, PA

Our family of 5 (kids ages 13,11 & 2) has decided to visit Hershey Park this July. First time to this area and looking for either a full facility campground (one with activity program and cabin rentals) or a hotel that offers suites due to family size. Would like one room.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi!
We spent two weeks traveling around Pennsylvania last August and loved every minute of it. We spent about four days camping right at the Hershey Campground but can't remember the exact name of it. It has a shuttle to the amusement park and we could smell chocolate right in our campsite!!! The campground is about six miles away...very clean and beautiful pool.

Hershey has their own campground which is near the park. We've only stayed at the Hotel Hershey so not sure about the campground, but I think they maintain their properties fairly well.

But, the benefit of staying at one of their hotels is the shuttle service to and from the park and the ability to get into parts of the park an hour early.

Here's the link to their website. It looks like they have 2 room cabins.

They also operate 2 hotels, the Hotel Hershey and the Hershey Lodge. The Lodge is more economical than the Hotel. We just booked for Memorial Day weekend at the Hotel and the rate was $369 (average) for 2 nights. The Lodge is probably $125 to $150 less per night.

There are several suite type hotels nearby. But, I think they probably have limited activities.

BTW, when planning a day at the park, make sure you bring bathing suits. One part of the park is mostly water attractions, including a new play area that's under construction.

As an aside, and not that this matters, but the hotels and campground are not operated by the chocolate company but by the Hershey Foundation which also owns the park.

You might also wish to check out the Simmons Motel. It has several houses designed to accomodate families, is located on Chocolate Avenue (the main street in Hershey) in the center of town, and is an easy 15 minute walk away from the park. It's not a fancy place by any means, but it's clean and comfortable.

If you have the time, take the family to Knoebels amusement resort, it's less than two hours from HersheyPark in Elysburg PA. It's the antithesis of a huge corporate park. Free admission (you purchase ride tickets), free parking, great food, some excellent roller coasters, carousels, dark rides, bumper cars, etc. I like their collection of antique carousel organs around the park. I think your kids would like that park as well. www.knoebels.com (website currently under reconstruction so check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knoebels for some detailed info).

Knoebel's Grove is only good for smaller children; teenagers would never be impressed.

I have never been impressed with Hershey Park, although maybe I am biased. When I was 17, my friends--Brian and Lucy--were ejected from the park by security guards. When going through a tour of the chocolate factory we got out of our car and rearranged a display of a mannekin making a chocolate cake in a kitchen diorama. We placed the mannekin up on a countertop and stuck a blender between its legs!

Oh, the machinations of youth!

In my experience the Hershey Lodge, the 'budget' Hershey property is grossly over priced, even if it is $150 less than the Hershey hotel.

Rooms are not a lot different than your roadside Motel 6, and there are no amenities (as you might find at a Disney Hotel) to add any value to the property.

Hi, my boyfriend and I recently visited the Hershey/Harrisburg area. We stayed at a lovely bed and breakfast called the Canna Country Inn in Etters, PA. It's not a far drive from Hershey. They have lovely rooms, great rates, and a new Hershey Suite, made just for families. Here is a link to the site. The people that run the place are great. They're friendly but unintrusive. Breakfast and snacks are plentiful and the entire place as a clean, cozy, modern but rustic atmosphere.
