help with itinerary: 1 day in Newport
we will be in Newport for one day from 10am to 6pm at the end of October, arriving via cruiseship.
this is the current plan: tour the breakers, then do part of cliffwalk. head back to town. do a walking tour of town (on our own) and peruse some shops.
anything else we should definitely see/do? we are traveling with a 16 month old, so we won't be able to do any more than one mansion or museum.
are there any parks or playgrounds where she could run around for a bit?
i am also debating on cliff walk. we will have her in a front- or backpack carrier, but i'm wondering if this is do-able. i have heard that parts of the walk are not easily navigable, but we weren't planning on doing the whole walk.
other things i was considering are a harbor cruise or renting bikes. maybe it will be too cold for either of these.
any thoughts are welcome. thanks in advance.

Jen- sounds like you have a good plan. I wouldn't worry too much about a harbour/bay boat tour, quite frankly you'll have a much better view from your cruise ship as you enter and leave the Bay (OK so you'll miss the witty historical narratives of a real tour). Don't sweat the Cliff Walk, I think the short section near the Breakers is in good shape, will be easily negotiable with your child, and will give you a good idea of what the Cliffwalk is all about.

Thanks Larry. That's what i was thinking about the Harbor Cruise. I saw in a brochure some people on a small boat passing what looked like the mansions, so I thought that might be a good way to get a view if we didn't do Cliffwalk.
Without our daughter, we would certainly do the entire Cliffwalk! But I'm glad that there is part that will be relatively easy to do with her in tow.
Again, thanks for your help!

Jen...
Just went to Newport over Labor Day weekend. I can definitely vouch for the fact that the Cliff Walk is more than doable with your little one in tow. The walk up to the Breakers is easily navigable....you can get off there and take the tour. If you have time for another mansion, might I recommend the Marble House....gorgeous! Have fun!!

doug, thanks for the second "you can do it" for cliffwalk. it's definitely on the agenda! most places recommend doing the breakers then taking cliffwalk, but i think i liked your suggestion of doing cliffwalk first then the breakers.
i heard the marble house is good - some say it's better than the breakers! if weather is bad, and we want to spend more time indoors, then we'll try to hit marble house as well.
thanks again for the suggestions!
