Help with Brooklyn Itinerary

I will be traveling to New York the last week in April with my boyfriend. We are both 24 years old but not into the clubbing scene. We've been to New York 3 times but have never been to Brooklyn and this year I would really like to spend a day there. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for what to do and where to eat? I'm into art and I have heard there are a lot of galleries. We were thinking about doing a Friday because the Brooklyn Brewery has happy hour on Friday nights. Does anyone know if it's any good? Our budget is low to moderate.

If you are interested in art then there are a number of galleries in the area called DUMBO, which is a stupid name and means Down Under the Brooklyn Bridge Underpass.

I would also recommend the Brooklyn Museum which has an outstamding Egyptian collection.

Also the residential architecture and hisrtory of Brooklyn heights is deep and rich.

DUMBO is indeed a dumb acronym for Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass.

Williamsburg is a fun place to explore in Brooklyn.

So here's the thing, 2.5 million people live in Brooklyn and it is 71 square miles (Manhattan is only 23 square miles), things are a bit spread out and mainly residential. So I would suggest picking one or two areas to explore.

My first suggestion would be Williamsburg:
I think the Brooklyn Brewery is in Williamsburg and there are lots of galleries in the area. The area is also filled with a younger crowd, so it is probably a good place to end your tour of Brooklyn for the happy hour and the nightlife. W'burg has a good number of bars/pubs, restaurants, happy hours, music venues which might fit your budget friendly requirement.

Here is a list of galleries in Williamsburg: http://www.freewilliamsburg.com/galleries.html

The same site has a Williamsburg guide on the left side of the page.

The second area I would suggest is the Brooklyn Heights/Downtown/DUMBO areas:
There's the Brooklyn Bridge, the galleries in DUMBO, the Brooklyn Promenade and walking around BK Heights to get a sense of Brownstone Brooklyn.

One other budget friendly entertaining idea, this depends on if plan to be in NYC on May 1, is the Target First Saturdays at the Brooklyn Museum http://www.brooklynmuseum.org/visit/first_saturdays.php it includes free admission to the museum, free activities (movies, museum talks, special performances) and there is usually dancing at the end of the night. The subway stops right outside of the museum, so it is convenient to get to.

If you like music, listen to chamber music (some freebies) on floating barge (Bargemusic), pizza at Grimaldi's and ice cream at Brooklyn Ice Cream or whatever it's called.

We have been to Fort Defiance a few times. (It was one of the few places on Van Brunt opened for lunch.) They expended their menu and today they had the best chocolate pudding we have ever eaten. It was rich, creamy, and tasted like a combination of both sweet and bitter-sweet chocolate, topped by their own whipped cream. The waitress bet us we wound want more than one the three of us split. She barely lost

There's also a new "36 hours in NYC" by the NY times it includes a walk around Cobble Hill
http://travel.nytimes.com/2010/01/10...l?ref=nyregion

Here's an old tour of Brooklyn:

Two other things to mention:
1. Southpaw is a music venue in Park Slope that may be of interest

2. The Brooklyn Flea may also be worth checking out on the weekend

Have fun!
