Hawaii cruise--luggage

We are going on the POA Hawaii cruise in Jan. We'll come in a day early--still working on a hotel for that night. BUT the main problem, our flt after the cruise doesn't leave until 10pm, any ideas what to do with our luggage until then. Sure don't want to sit at the airport. Thought maybe rent a car, but didn't know if luggage would be safe in parking lots. Any great ideas? Thanks

We did this cruise several years ago. Stayed in Kona for a week before cruise for DH's business and then flew to Honolulu for cruise. After cruise took a ship excursion that was about 8 hrs touring the entire island. It was really great. Got off the ship, put luggage on bus and away we went with all luggage. After tour we were dropped off at the airport for our 10:30 flight which was about 8:00. Lunch was included at the Turtle Bay Resort and we grabbed dinner at airport and boarded our flight for Houston. Hope this helps.

Ask your hotel to hold your luggage for you...but this of course would require you to return to the hotel at some point to retrieve your baggage. OR...rent the room for a second day as well. We actually did this recently in Hawaii when we were taking the red eye home...just rented the room for one more night and didn't have to worry about luggage, showers, etc. and had the whole day to relax.

ALSO...just because your cruise doesn't leave until 10 p.m. doesn't mean that you'll be arriving 2 hrs before (like a plane). Find out when the earliest is that you can check in for the cruise! You might be surprised.

silkismom is asking about after the cruise. Cruise arrives about between 6 and 8 am but flight doesn't leave until 10:00 pm. I think I am reading it correctly, if not I apoligize.

We had the same problem 2 years ago. We ended up renting a car for the day - the rental cars will pick you up, free of charge, at the cruise ship terminal. We were also worried about leaving our luggage in the car, but it turns out that right at the terminal where the POA docks, they will store your luggage for the day (not overnight - just for the day). I can't remember what the cost was, but it wasn't much. It worked out very well - my husband headed out to rent the car, and I took care of the luggage. The luggage was taken off the ship as usual, and the storage place was right there (in the same building) - just had to move into a different line, basically. The guys from the storage place helped me as I had 4 bags to deal with. Our flight was also at 10:00 pm, and I think we picked up our bags at 6;30 pm, and then just dropped off the car at the airport. We drove over to the other side of the island and had a wonderful day!

Here is the only airport baggage service that I know of:

http://www.alohaairportdeliveryandstorage.com/

If you go to the Pearl Harbor museums (USS Arizona Memorial, USS Missouri, USS Bowfin, Pacific Aviation Museum), they have a bag check area for about $3 a bag. They close at 5pm.

Luggage in the trunk of a car will be relatively safe at USS Arizona parking lot, Honolulu Zoo paring lot, Ala Moana Beach, but only if you do not open the trunk for any reason while you are there. Thieves will look for people transferring things from the passenger section to the trunk or getting things out of the trunk. They will target cars when they know something valuable is in them.

Beaches around the island are generally not safe as far as car break-ins. But you could tour the island as long as you don't leave the area of your car. Once again, don't open the trunk of the car.

I'd see if you can rent a car and then head into Waikiki. Pay to park it at a hotel garage or public parking like around the Zoo.

Then you could spend the day with some time at the beach, strolling Waikiki, shopping, having a nice lunch & dinner somewhere.

As long as you don't open the trunk, I would think your belongs would be safe parked in the very busy Waikiki area.
