Has the Hotel Del Coronado gone way downhill in past years and now??

Hi,
Can anyone tell me if they know whether the Hotel Del Coronado has gone downhill considerably? We stayed there 10 yrs. ago or so and loved it but from what I am reading, it seems like things have really changed.

Anyone with first hand knowledge? Please let me know. I must make a decision soon regarding our trip in July!!!

Thank you.

Jennifer

I don't think it has gone downhill in that time. The complaint most have is that the Hotel is over a hundred years old, and the rooms in the original section can vary quite a bit. Some are quite small and noise can be a factor as the walls are wood.

I think their service has always been a bit weak, as they kind of coast on their reputation. It is a great historic hotel though, and in the absolute best location. In the last two or three years they opened a new restaurant and built the 'villas' on the beach front.

I would stay there!

There are definitely differences in rooms. The older ones are variable but usually charming. there is a newer section that IMHO is not worth the money.

Make sure exactly what you're getting - and that it fits what you want - before booking.

We loved our 3 night stay at the Del in Dec. of 2006, we had a nice room in the Victorian section of the hotel. I love this resort! ***kim***

They've had a big re-do project recently and it looks really nice, but make sure your rooms are as new as possible.

We went to the 1500 Ocean restaurant there in November. My friend ordered a mojito and it was bland as could be. When she asked for another she was asked whether she knew what a mojito was. We left a two cent tip.
