Gulfport - My Favourite New Town

Way back, when this road trip was being planned in the depths of a British winter, many kind contributors to this forum suggested a visit to Gulfport. How right they were! If you're travelling this way, it's well worth calling in. If you'd like to catch up on our travels round Florida, you can find all the details of what we've seen and done - right here: http://apacheterritory.blogspot.co.uk/ Thanks Richard and Sue.

Thanks for the post; actually there are more than a few towns like that here in Florida but you usually don't hear much about them.

We've only a week left in Florida - next stop Inglis and then inland to Weirsdale - but I'd love the names of a few more towns like Gulfport. Thanks

Apalachicola

Wonderful little historic town.
Best oysters ever
Beautiful, almost deserted beaches at Indian Pass and Cape San Blas
The best hole in the wall restaurant - in a former general store - Indian Pass Raw Bar

Love reading your blog, thanks for posting! The Sanibel Stoop, indeed

Btw, I hope you've been drinking your share of craft beer, we have loads of great producers in Florida!

Apalachicola indeed! Was lucky enough to visit there on a previous occasion. NewbE: rest assured the first thing I sort out is where they sell craft beers. I have not been disappointed. My only rule is to write the blog before enjoying the beer!

I've not been and I don't think there's much of a town or anything else around but friends go to Steinhatchee for scalloping every year. It's a big fishing area. If you are nearby it may be worth a stop to see what's there -

If you haven't been to the sponge docks of Tarpon Springs, stop there. It's not far from you and great Greek food.

Bartow is a pretty inland town. The movie, My Girl, was filmed there.

If you want to go back in time, visit Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings homeplace in Cross Creek. The house and farm looks like she walked out the door and will be right back. Gives you an idea of how hard it was to live in the scrubland of central Florida.
