Best beach in the most northeast section of Florida

I am taking my son on a college road trip from Columbia, SC to Tallahassee, FL and
would like to make a stop in northeast Florida to relax and break up the drive. Can anyone
recommend a scenic beach? Is Amelia Island worth the effort? Suggestions for something fun to do?

Amelia and Fernandina. Fernandina is less stuffy.

If you wanted to drive further, I am fascinated by the area around Cedar Key and Appalachicola, though I haven't been there. You can write a trip report!

Ackislander I do have a short report on that area: http://www.fodors.com/community/unit...as-florida.cfm

Cape San Blas is about two hrs south of Tallahassee,( 30 min from Appalachicola) not the area you requested ccolon but a wonderful beach with a laid back feel.

I love the Cape San Blas/ Indian Pass area. It's like going back in time to "Old Florida". Apalachicola is a nice little historic town. St. George Island has more stuff to do. If you just want beach, any of the above are great options.

If you are going to Tallahassee, I think the Gulf beaches than anything else in Florida. They are really the only beaches that are like those found in popular Caribbean destinations like Anguilla.
