Anyone have info/experience about when the road to the north rim will be open? We'll be driving from southern Utah (Kanab). Are planning trip mid-April to first part of May. Any web site so that I can keep an eye on the prospective opening date of the road. Thx for any info.

Usually Mid-May, depends on the snow. The lodge opens at that date.
check www.nps.gov and look for Gr. Canyon North Rim, maybe it gives more info

In 2001 I drove from the South Rim to the North Rim (and then onto Bryce nad Zion)around May 21-22. Fantastic trip - especially through the Vermillion Cliffs.

Last year we arrived at the North Rim on May 25 and there was still a lot of snow on the ground. One of the roads was still closed that day but opened the next.
We stopped at Jacob Lake and someone there told us the North Rim had been very late opening due to so much snow. She said many people had stopped there who had reservations for the dates the lodge was projected to open, but couldn't get in because the road was still closed.
Luckily I had read that the projected opening date is tentative and I chose not to schedule our vacation until late May.

May 15th is the date they try to open the North Rim Lodge and access road by, which, as these folks have reported is contingent on the weather cooperating. This year, Northern Arizona has experienced a much milder, drier winter, which resulted in the road remaining open a bit longer than usual last winter, and could result in the road opening sooner in the springtime.
