GoTravel's Excellent San Diego Adventure!

I just got back from San Diego and thought I'd post a short trip report.

Flight out: Flew United Airlines and it was a wonderful experience. Flew out of Charleston, SC to Chicago O'Hare and then on to San Diego.

Had an amazing experience. On the flight out, the Captain decided to zig zag over the Grand Canyon so everyone would have a great view. We were ahead of schedule and so he also circled part of the Grand Canyon. I've been there before and I've flown across country at least a dozen times but I've never had a pilot purposely show us the Grand Canyon. United Airlines Rocks!

San Diego: Flew in, short ride to the Manchester Hyatt. Amazing hotel. Huge but didn't have that huge convention hotel feel.

Room: Amazing. We were the end room on the 27th floor in the old building facing the Pacific. Two walls were floor to ceiling glass windows. Holy cow what a view!

Highlights! Party at Gaslamp District. Bad Company was the band and it was a lot of fun!

Weather: Upper 60s to lower 70s. It was cooler in San Diego than it was at home but you could still sunbathe by the pool. They had a great hot tub.

Memorable eats: Freds Mexican on Fifth in Gaslamp and Busters Beach Club in Seaport Village.

Mirimar: Went out there specifically to attend a party at Mirimar Military Base. Wow, wow, wow. The military had the aircraft out for us to see and a lot of the military was invited to the party. I would estimate 4,000 at this party. The entertainment was Matchbox 20. Rob Thomas is the cutest thing that ever walked the face of the earth. They put on a fantastic show.

Sounds great. Are you in the military?? I feel very old. Have never heard of any of these bands OR Rob Thomas. Where'd you go for that drink?

mclaurie, you've never heard of Bad Company? Big 70s band.

Matchbox 20 is one of those mainstream rock and roll bands. I know you've heard one of their songs but didn't realize they were the ones singing.

We had cocktails all over the place. I don't even know where we went. We didn't make it to the Hotel Del or to the 40th floor of the Hyatt! Slack, I know.

We aren't in the military. Mirimar rents the facility out and the proceeds go towards the military personel.

The most memorable cocktail was in our room. The view was simply amazing. We could see the Hotel Del, all of Coronado Island, and the island/penninsula beyond. When it was clear, probably a twenty mile view.

Great report, Go! Great TRIP! I want your job! Or was this a pleasure trip? Either way, too fun! San Diego has the perfect balance of climate and culture, plus i love both bands. I am GREEN with envy! But thanks for sharing.

Glad you had a good visit to San Diego. Hubby grew up there- how lucky! We also stayed at the Hyatt in the past, pretty impressive place and a great central location. Happy travels.

Excellent, GT.

Makes me want top go back again. We have SD on the "to do" list as we'd like to see a Padre game at the new Petco Park and then go to one of my fave places, the park bench in front of the Cabrillo Lighthouse on Pt Loma and watch the world go by.

I can't believe a United flight that was fun!!!!

Kal, so you're the one always hogging my bench?

I got to see the new ballpark a couple of weeks ago and it's quite a sight! We'll be at an exhibition game there April 3...I'll give a "park report."

JP, Ain't it beautiful up there?
Wish they'd keep it open a bit longer than they do.

I knew they were building a new park but didn't know the exact location unti lwe came down last June for the RocknRoll. It will totally revitalize the area. I've seen it in Balto and SF.
Can't wait.

I'll await your report...especially the food/beer reviews!

Kal, we could saw the ballpark several times and it was very nice. Very close to/on top of the Gaslamp District which should be a huge money maker for them.

Forgot to add the Horton Plaza is a real gem.

Horton Plaza is so special because it is one of those big blah faceless malls that is neither! It is like a mall was turned inside out then they took the roof off! It was so cool, my husband wanted to hang out there.

We just stayed at the Manchester Hyatt. Anybody know why they call it Manchester? Seems like when it first opened the Manchester part wasn't there. Did you get the room off of Priceline? When we stayed there last week, we got it off of Priceline for $70. Also had a beautiful room and nice view of the pool from the 34th floor. Awesome pool.

We went to the Martini Ranch for a, uh, martini. Fun place. And then the concierge recommended a place in the Gaslamp called Lou and Mickeys. Kind of a Chicago style steak/fish place. Well, it was wonderful. We had a great meal and great service. I highly recommend it if you want to try something new. Lots of appetizers, seafood, salads, and light meals too. Crab cakes and roasted beet salad will get me back for another meal.

Heavens, the "Manchester" part refers to Doug Manchester, the developer who built it. I'm not sure how his name came to be on it, though.

Kal,

I was planning to write a "game report" after the first exhibition game at Petco Park, but alas, I had to stay home with our two sick kids. My oh-so DH rounded up three friends to go with him instead (no public comment on that one). He LOVED the new park. He said parking and getting in and out of the area was a breeze. He reported great views of the city and the field from most areas of the concourse. So, yes, a trip to SD for a b-ball game is warranted.

Loved the trip report. I actually live here in North County Coastal San Diego, (Cardiff to be exact) and lately hubby and I have been moaning about housing prices and what we could buy if we moved to another state, etc.

Thanks for the reality check. We are so lucky to live in this beautiful city. I'm happy that you had such a wonderful time. Also, I'm going to my first game at Petco Park on Saturday night. Can't wait.

JP,
Thx for the 411. I watched parts of the Giants/Pads games over the weekend. Looked VERY nice.

I liked The Murph but you just can't beat a downtown ballpark.
I'm really excited about the proposed stadium in Manhattan. That should be very interesting.
