Glen, NH area (Storyland, White mts.)

Hello All!

We have reserved a few nights at the Covered Bridge Inn in Glen, NH in August. Our primary focus is Storyland as we have a 3 1/2 year old and a 14 mos. old. Is there anything else in the area that we shouldn't miss? What about kid-friendly restaurants? Hikes? I've got a book of hikes that I'll look at but I do value the input from you experts here at Fodors! TIA!!!!!!

You really might enjoy the tour at the Annalee Doll factory in Meredith and while you are there, have lunch or dinner at Harts Turkey Farm. Meredith, the Weirs and Center Harbour all on Lake Winepasaukee (haven't had to spell that in years) is a lovely area of NH and you might also enjoy spending a day at the beach in the area.

I am sure you can find the New Hampshire Visitors center on line and gets lots more info.

Have a fun time.

most of the hikes in that area could be too heavy duty.... I'd tell you to go up mount washington but it is one of the windiest places on the PLANET and on a given day, it would blow you away and not sure that's what you want with the little ones,

you can visit franconia notch state park, it will give you a little bit of nature with out having to tough it up to a ridge in the whites.

The Glen Junction restaurant has a cute train theme, and is always loaded with families.

I think you can go into StoryLand the evening before you use your ticket for no extra charge. You could take your kids to the Nursery Rhyme playground if that's the case. You are also only an hour or so from Santa's Village, which is another nice theme park in NH, or a trip to the Mount Washington Hotel for lunch, and perhaps a walk around the grounds.

If you like "fancy" dress clothes for the kids, Wooden Soldier has an outlet store in No. Conway; I think their big bi-annual sale is in August.
Have fun!

one of my best friends is taking her 8 yr old in july. they are very excited and will be staying in a campground with small private cabins.
go to www.glenelliscampground.com and click on attractions you will find a list (all linked) to alot of the cool kid stuff to do in the area.
i agree that the local hiking would be alot for a 3 yr old.
it is quite a drive from glen to winnipesaukee. it could take 30 mins just to get down the conway strip(rte302).

There's a good book out there called something like What to Do with Kids In New England. The section on Glen covers a number of restaurants, playgrounds, even hikes with commentary on age appropriateness. My version is 10 years old but I think its been updated.

By the way - we love Storyland. My kids are now 9 and 12 and still want to go. The 12 yo wants to take her young cousins and show them her favorite things.

Hi greenmtngirl -

The hike up to Diana's Bath is not too bad if you are carrying a 14 mos. old. Not hard or steep just might take your 3 year old awhile. Diana's Bath is located on West Side Rd. Take 302 towards the Mt. Washington Hotel then sort of backtrack left after the bridge. Take a right onto West Side Rd. The parking lot will be on your right. The playground in No. Conway center is pretty nice. Bring a picnic. Once you have your hand stamped you can go in and out of Storyland so you don't have to eat the food there. I think they even have an onsite dog kennel. If you want to sit down in the cool if not quiet for awhile, go to Professor (something's) Laboratory where the 3 yr. old can spend hours shooting nerf balls at everybody in sight. Scarecrow Pub, UpCountry, Fandangles, the Red Parka Pub are all fairly kid friendly. There is a very good pizza place on 302 heading west from Storyland whose name escapes me. Have a great trip!

<<I think you can go into StoryLand the evening before you use your ticket for no extra charge.>>

If you don't know about this, here's how it works. If you purchase your tickets after a certain time, (it's usually 3 p.m. but I think early in the season when park hours are shorter it's 2 p.m.), you can enjoy the park for the last few hours of the day. Upon purchasing your tickets, you will receive a voucher that will give you free admission to the park for any day for the rest of the season. So for your stay, you could use it the next day or wait a day. It's nice to have that few hours the first day to do one section of the park and to get a feel for everything.

About the food at the park...although you can come and go from Storyland during the day, with young kids, I always found it easier to stay put. Picnic lunches are welcome there, but I will say that their food is so inexpensive in comparison to most other theme parks and the like. They have the typical fare--burgers, hot dogs, chicken fingers, etc. Nothing special, but completely acceptable.

We also liked Santa's Village, but it is very similar to Storyland. For your kids' ages, I prefer Storyland. If you were going to be there longer than a few days, I'd say try Santa's Village, but for an adult, it might be overkill to do both parks.

You might want to try Clark's Trading Post. Forget exactly where, but only 30 minutes or less from Glen. There's brochures at every hotel. It's incredibly hokey, but our kids (then 5, 3, and almost 1) loved it. There's a train ride, during which a "wolf man" (a guy with a beard and old, dirty clothes) chases after the train. I know it sounds scary for little ones, but all the kids on board loved it. Our friends 3-year-old daughter was absolutely fascinated with the wolf man and had to pose for a picture with him afterwards. There's a few other attractions and a couple of shows. The bear show was cute. The kids also loved the actual trading post, where they had all sorts of trinkets for kids. Again, it was terribly hokey, but the kids (especially our friends' daughters) were begging to go back the next year. (We didn't, because that year we ended up at Santa's Village instead.)

Have fun. It's such a lovely area. I'll miss our yearly jaunt this year. We've been going since my oldest was 1 1/2, but my boys, now 7 and 5, feel they're too old for Storyland. (They're real roller coaster kids--my 5 year old's fav ride at Disney is Tower of Terror, and that was when he was 4!) But your kids are just the perfect age for the park. Maybe I'll have to sneak up there with just my 2 year old for a girls weekend! Enjoy!

Big ups for Diana's Baths. Also, drive up Cathedral Ledge for awesome views.

Six-Gun City is a bit of a drive but cool for the young'ns. It's on Rt. 2 north of Glen. See http://www.sixguncity.com/

Also, consider Santa's Village on Rt. 2. See http://www.santasvillage.com/

Near Glen in North Conway there is a nice park with antique railroad rides.

Maybe the best is to simply find a nice spot along the Saco or Swift Rivers and have a picnic.

My wife and I are thinking of taking a similar trip with our 2 1/2 year old daughter this summer. Does anyone have hotel recommendations for this area? We just want a place that is nice and clean and not too expensive. Thanks!

We've always stayed at the Nordic Village. Great pools and activities at night.

We also always stay at Nordic Village. My friend's daughter actually enjoys the nighttime activities there more than she does Storyland!
