Getting out of NYC - Need weekend getaway suggestions pls!

Looking to getaway and explore the NE part of the country. Originally from the Midwest. Need weekend getaway suggestions, preferably something along the water. Looking to go Mem Day Wknd. Would rent a car. We have done Newport, RI and Boston so far. Open to B&Bs.

Closest options on the shore are either Long Island (Fire Island/Montauk/Hamptons/Shelter Island) or Jersey Shore (Spring Lake, Cape May, Pt. Pleasant, Long Beach Island, Long Branch)

Many b & b's have minimum stays over a holiday weekend (and many hotels do too). If you haven't already booked a rental car, you may have a problem with availability.

We used to stay at the Normandy Inn B&B in Spring Lake... nice place about a block from the Ocean... good luck!

Recommending The Breakers in Spring Lake. Across the street from the beach.

If possible, Charleston, SC is a great place to visit for all ages. Lots of beauty, history, beaches, antiques, shopping and wonderful food.

Charleston SC from NYC on a holiday weekend... driving? ugh!

At minimum you need a 5/day trip as it takes up 1/day of daylight travel each way!

Charleston is a nice getaway from northern Florida.

For Memorial Day weekend you should rent a car now - or may be shut out.

Cape Cod should be fun but might be chilly - and traffic will be truly incredible.

Saratoga is fascinating - but most of the activities center around the racing (late July to being Sept) and arts in the Berkshries (July and Aug). But the prices should be right - check to see what is open - and bring sweaters for the evenings.

If you've never explore LI there is way more than the Hamptons - you could even stick to th North Fork and sights closer to the city (Teddy Roosevelts House, Old WEstbury Garden and Mansion, Old Bethpage Restoration) - and you can often get condos right on the beach in Amagansett at early summer rates.
