From Honolulu to North Shore?

How does one get from the Honolulu airport to a private home on the north shore (near Kahuku)? Is there a shuttle service? How much are taxis for that distance? Any other options?

I don't think you want to take a taxi as it would be incredibly expensive. Just a trip to Waikiki runs about $20 and that's only 8 some miles away. Kahuku is about 40 miles away and if you arrive on a weekday afternoon, you'll be facing peak traffic as well.

You really need to rent a car. The bus would be a nightmare with luggage. Maybe limo service. I'm sure that's not cheap. A taxi would just be outrageous. There may be a small private shuttle service. I know some towns have them.

Unfortunately, renting a car is not an option. The three travelers needing to find transportation are college students who are just slightly below the age rental car companies will rent to.

Cougar-Get your hands on the latest issue of 'Islands Magazine'-contrary to island moms opinion there is an excellent article on the service to the North Shore ! And as you are college students I imagine there's not too much luggage. We spent 2 weeks on the North Shore last September-you will love it!

rasnes5, Why don't you save us a lot of trouble and TELL us what the article says.

And there is that expression again - "You will love it because we loved it". Not necessarily true.

Why not call the Turtle Bay and find out how their guests without cars get out to their resort. Perhaps they have a contract service that is affordable.

Tried to pull up this article from the online edition of "Islands" magazine. So far haven't been able to find the article on service to the north shore, and we live in such a small town that local stores do not carry this publication.

Cougar, the article in "Islands" won't help you with specific information. (In fact the author got stranded several times by buses that departed early, so I didn't think it was exactly a glowing recommendation for the Bus.) But for your situation, "The Bus" as it is called is a good option. the web site is thebus.org, and you can find specific info there on the luggage restrictions, as well as routes. Be sure to check how close the Bus can get you to the house, if it is off of the main highway.

Gohawaii.com is website of the HI visitors bureau and lists cab companies etc. with links to their web sites.

If you are renting a house, maybe the owner or rental agent can help with ideas for transportation. Good luck!
