Frisco, Colorado reunion August

Our family will hold a reunion in August in Frisco, CO. Any suggestions re places to go, restaurants, tips in general?

How did you handle the 9,000 foot elevation? How long did it take to adjust? Many thanks....

We ski, and to cope with the altitude, we refrain from alcohol and caffeine for the first two days. Altitude is dehydrating, as are alcohol and caffeine. We drink a lot of water, and take an aspirin every morning and every evening to think the blood and improve oxygenation.

In an ideal world, we'd spend one day in Denver (5000') before going up into the mountains, but we've never done that. Our ski trips are a week, and we still aren't sleeping well at the end of the week, but that doesn't prevent us from skiing every day.

On average with the normal person it takes about one to two days to adjust to every thousand feet of altitude gained. Where are you coming from? The whole area is loaded with good restaurants and a several breweries. Dam Brewery in Dillon and the Breckenridge Brewery in ... Dam Brewery has excellent medium priced food.

Thanks for the various tips and information. Also, we are coming from Seattle, and will be driving. Thus, perhaps we can take a bit of time along the way to get used to the elevation.

Any further information is welcomed.

Thank you, Fodorites!

Samplings on Main Street is really good.

Some people have a problem with elevation, some just don't. You never know who will. Just take it slow, drink lots of water, and take asprin. You'll be a really cheap drunk! (the advice to go easy on alcohol is good) Also, bring lots of chapstick and lotion.

Driving from Seattle will not make much difference. Need to live continuous at altitude. Altitude sickness is very poorly understood. Someone can come to altitude four times and be fine but sick as a dog on the fifth trip. Aspirin will primarily treat the headache. The problem is that you don't have enough white corpuscles to carry the oxygen you need. Locals have about 25% more white corpuscles than you do. And it takes a while for your blood to catch up. Just take it easy and if you feel light head, sit down. Frisco is a little lower than Breckenridge and that may help some. Now, if anyone has breathing problems, they could be really affected. But Frisco has an excellent emergency hospital that will take very good care of you. In sever cases they will fly you to a lower elevation -- probably Denver.

A wide spread beetle infestation is taking place right now. Trees are mixed between the naturally verdant colors and brown from the bugs. They are hoping there won't be a forest fire. The timber would be a very bad fire starter. That's one of the big issues there right now.

August in Frisco can be hot during the day, bring sunscreen. A hat. Sunglasses.

Since you are driving, I am certain the altitude will be felt, but it won't be sudden like when you get of an airplane.

I recommend renting a bike, and either riding towards Breckenridge or towards Copper Mountain.

There will be tons of tourists so bring your patience.

We ate at a deli in Silverthorne called The Smiling Moose. It was very good. There is a bakery a few doors down that also has Moose in the name and their baked goods are wonderful.

The Butterhorn Cafe on Main St. is great for breakfast and take home bread items. I don't know about "tons of tourists". Summer is usually pretty quite in Summit County.
