fourth of july vacation
Hi, I'm planning a trip to newport with my best friend during the fourth of july. I now rooms get booked quickly which is why I'm planning our vacation now. I noticed that Newport seems to be more a romantic vacation than a girls only vacation. Is there an active nightlife in Newport during the summer or should I reconsider Newport as a girls only summer vacation? Thanks

Newport has a VERY active social scene. It's a hot spot for house rentals for young professionals in the corridor from NY to Boston.
In addition, URI, a notorious party school, is just about 30 minutes away. Some former colleagues who went to URI would go back several times a summer, in their younger days, to meet up with their college friends.

As someone who spent her college years and early 20's partying in Newport, I can confirm that there is plenty of fun nightlife there. (Of course it was more fun during the America's Cup races when there were lots of cute Aussie sailors around ).
I'm sure that you're aware that it will be very crowded on Fourth of July weekend. I know there are plenty of restaurant recommendations if you do a search on this board. My particular favorites are:
The Black Pearl for Chowder.
Salas' for the New England Clamboil
Christy's for Seafood
Brick Alley Pub for casual burgers, sandwiches.
Since I live on the West Coast now, I don't know what the current hot bars are. If you just walk along Thames Street, and around the Wharf areas, you'll find plenty of fun places to pop in and out of.
Have fun!

As lvk says all you need to do is stroll around and see what's hot, but here are some places that are sure to be jumpin on the weekend of the fourth: The Landing, the outside bar usually has a live guitarist and is a good early evening stop. For late nights, One Pelham East has been a central part of the Newport Party scene for decades- they will have a live band and will be so crowded on the weekends you won't be able to move- if you are able to get in. Christie's outside deck bar will also have a band late night and will be a hotspot. Keep in mind that "late night" for Newport is around 10-1; bars close at 1:00 am. At that point, the 20 somethings then lurch drunkenly back to their houses/hotel rooms, screaming at the top of their lungs and waking up the locals. Newport CAN be a very "romantic" destination-but during the three summer holiday weekends, it well deserves its nickname as "Zooport"!
