Fort Myers Area
Hi,
Planning a long weekend to Fort Myers Beach Area at the end of October. I'm frustrated because all the places on or near the beach are nice, however, charge $100-$120 cleaning fee which is crazy for a four day stay.
Moving on though. I'm looking for a place in the area whether it be Sanibel Island, Cape Coral, etc. where I can see the large freighter ships go by. Does anyone know a place to stay where that may be possible?
Appreciate any information that can be provided or if anyone knows of a secret hideway that has great scenic views, dolphin/manatee viewing, sunsets, etc.
Thanks again,
Chip

What percentage of your entire vacation expense will the cleaning fee represent? Would the total price be acceptable if they had folded the cleaning fee into the rental? (I assume that this is VRBO or similar).
Long weekends are likely to be just as expensive as a full week, especially off season like October. You get more days for the same cleaning fees
I have a lot of experience in Gulf Florida, from Tampa south, and only around Tampa Bay (including for these purposes the mouth of Tampa Bay between St Petersburg and maybe Bradenton) will you see large ships passing. Elsewhere, you see them waaaay offshore. If you like _any_ sort of ships, Miami has a huge port, some of it along the Miami River where dozens of smaller freighters that serve the Caribbean berth and load. You can get very close. Look at Google Maps satellite view.
Everywhere has sunsets except, perhaps, Cape Coral, which, no offense to property owners, doesn't have much of anything.

Does it have to be a VRBO type place or would you settle for something directly on the beach in Sanibel which provides a kitchen, porch, one or two bedrooms, with a pool on the general premises, etc.? If so, I can think of a place but you are a little late to the game for that area at this point I'm afraid.

Sorry for the delay. The place I was thinking of is at this link:
http://www.mitchellssandcastles.com/
Have stayed there in the past and we will again be there in November. We like it because it is pet-friendly, laid back, quiet, etc.
This is NOT some uber-luxurious resort (and we KNOW about those and have stayed in a few ourselves).
Call them if the site looks worthwhile and see if they have any availability.
