For anyone driving I-5 thru central CA in the next week . . .

A sink hole opened up in I-5 this morning and all northbound lanes are closed near Tracy in San Joaquin County . Cal Trans questimates the road will be closed for the rest of this week.

Detours are available but expect extensive delays.

Wow! Sure glad we don't need to head in that direction. Thanks for the news.

Feeling grateful that I finally decided to fly instead of drive to LA...

Yes -- they say by possibly Thursday afternoon.

The detour is 'only 6 or 7 miles' but the Tracy area is a major hub for ultra commuters to the Bay Area and the detour is on non-major highways 132 and 33 and could be confusing to those not familiar w/ the area. Just a heads up -- but they are working 24/7 to get it re-opened

By the looks of things on the news today, I bet it is more than a few days. And knowing how Cal Trans operates :/.

Latest update:

They are hoping to open the north bound lanes by 5PM Friday . . . But now the southbound lanes have also been closed and they are scheduled to reopen Saturday afternoon.

The delays are 20 to 45+ minutes depending on time of day.
