jandb We are going to the Big Island in dec and that is what my husband wants to do look it up on web sites it looks really neat to do. We have only 31/2 days there so don't know if we will do it or not..So much to do and not enough time.. When are you going? If you go before me please write and tell me what it was like, and if you enjoyed it?? I don't think too many people know about it does'nt seem to be a big topic .. I even asked a travel agent about it and she had never heard of it... My husband found it on a cnn site I think..

We had thought about doing it too when we read about it while we were on the Big Island a couple of years ago. My daughter and son-in-law told us it wasn't worth it - not nearly as fun or exciting as the hype made it out to be. They said it was "boring" - mind you, they're fairly adventurous travellers, but they seemed to think we wouldn't enjoy it, so we passed.

My family did the 'flume' in 2000. Great experience. A great opportunity to get a real Hawaii history adventure. Mind you, this is not a roller-coaster. The irrigation ditches were purely functional at one time. This is a slow but totally cool ride. Quiet, peaceful, travel through underground tunnels and lush foilage. Our guide was informative and fun - said he had recently taken Jim Carey on the same ride. If you are spending most of your visit on the beach, this is a refreshing change of pace - without all the usual "tourisy' trappings.

We did this in Oct. thought it was very relaxing. My husband didn't want to do it but after he was glad that we did. The ride to the ditch with the crew was a lot of fun also. But if you are looking for white water rafting this is not it.

My husband and I did this on our May 2003 trip. It was a wonderful experience if you know what to expect. As mentioned by others, this is not a thrill trip, but a quiet, peaceful relaxing journey through the rain forests with many long, dark tunnels. The guide, if you are lucky and get a good one, will tell you lots of Hawaiian folklore and stories. Our guide stopped to take our photos and showed us kukui nut trees, and we picked cinnamon leaves to taste. It is a little pricey, depends how important this type of activity is to you. Don't miss dinner at Huggo's in Kona - reserve ahead for an oceanfront table and watch the sunset--priceless! Hapuna Beach state park has the best white sand beach on the Kohala Coast. I have a wealth of info on Big Island-feel free to email me direct @ [email protected]

I took this ride several years ago and it was great fun. Unfortunately, the big earthquake a few years ago cause damage to the flume and adjoining tunnels which have brought a halt to the experience. As far as I can tell, it has been discontinued indefinitely.

In response to your rude comment I will tell you why. I have friends making a trip to the island and were interested in taking this trip. I came upon the sad news of the damage as I was looking for information. I also found this link and thought it would be nice to offer an addendum for those others looking for information. The big question would be why you felt it necessary to try to make me feel guilty for sharing information, no matter how old it is.
