First Time Traveler

Hello
Im a first time traveler to the United States, and Im really looking forward to it, but the thing thats worrying me the most is Ive no clue wot to exspect when i land in NJ.
I was wondering how long they keep you waiting at customs as Ive a connecting flight to Millwaukee, If Anyone has any advice for me I would be grateful.
thanks

I assume you're going through Newark. I've been through customs at Newark a couple of times. For whatever reason, the immigration/customs lines are usually longer for US citizens! Visitors get through in less time, particularly if you're flying a US carrier. (Most US-carrier passengers are American, hence the slower US citizen lines perhaps).

You may be fingerprinted but by most accounts that's a relatively quick procedure.

How long it takes is dependent on how many international flights land at the same time. For US citizens it can take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour - assume for foreign nationals it would be at least the same.

How much time do you have for your on-going flight? Do you have to pick up your luggage and take through customs (don;t know about Milwaukee airport) - US does not have the red/green system and this can be very time-consuming. Is the on-going flight on the same airline? Or will you have to change airlines and terminals?

I would ask them about the luggage. If you need to go through passport control and customs you will have time problems if your flight is even a few minutes late (security lines at Newark can be endless - and they ask you to check in for domestic flights at least 2 hours in advance).

You will have to claim your bags and go thru customs. Then when you leave the customs area there is a bagage check in just outside of the customs area. This will all be in Terminal C for continental airlines at ewr.you should have enough time

Hello Kev
Italiano is right, you will have to claim your bags, go thru customs, then recheck your luggage just outside of the customs area. From there you go upstairs to security check point. After that go strait to your gate. You do not need to go to the check-in counter. You are already checked in. Because your two flights are with Continental Airlines you will get your bording passes at your port of departure. Make certain you confirm in Newark your gate number for your Millwaukee flight. If your flight is delayed there is a customer service next to where you recheck your luggage. They will help you out by finding the next available flight, retag your bags and reissue a new boarding pass. Then put your bags on the belt, go upstairs to a security check point. Then to your gate. Good luck, I hope your flight is going to arrive on time. If not do not worry, it is Continental's responsibity to deliver you and your bags to your destination. Things do happen once a while but more often flights do arrive on time and you will make your connection.
I don't know how long it takes for visitors to get through customs and imigration but with about 30 internationla flights since 9/11 it never took us more than 15-20 minutes to go through immigration lines.
