First Gatlinburg, then where do we go in the area for something classy?

My partner and I are going to Gatlinburg for a wedding. I'd like to high-tail it out of there once the festivities are done and drive someplace in the area that's beautiful and non-cheesy. We'll be driving back to Indiana, so ideally it will be on the way or close by since it's already a six hour drive. I'd love to rent a cabin, have a lake for swimming, go hiking and eat in nice restaurants. We'd be there about 2-3 days. Any ideas? I'm open to any and all suggestions! Thanks!

Not my side of the mountain (I live in Asheville) but the Smokies will meet some of those needs (hiking, cabins).

How about using Gatlinburg as a base (comforable hotels, swimming pools, and restaurants) and doing day-trips to the Smokies?

Since you have already decided that Gatlinburg is not beautiful....which it is!.......and, that it is cheesy....which it may be to some, I would say say high-tail it out of there and drive all the way back to Indiana.

It'd be a little detour south, but I'd recommend going to Chattanooga, staying at Stone Fort Inn downtown. Chattanooga has a lot of offer, but it's on a river, not a lake, and no swimming unless in a pool. Maybe try the North Carolina side of the Smokies, but I'm not aware of any place like you describe.

Good luck with your planning!

If you don't like the tourist atmosphere of Gatlinburg, there are towns nearby such as Townsend or areas outside Sevierville that have the scenery without most of the bustle of the town. There are cabins all over the region, but if you want a cabin near nice restaurants, you may need to be closer to town.

P.S. Just thought of this place, I drove by it for the first time last week. It looked *really* nice from the outside.

Lake Cumberland Ky
or:

between Ky and Tenn

Rent a houseboat on either of these lakes or a cabin. The scenery is beautiful and 4 1/2 to 5hrs back to Indiana.

Haven't been there yet, but it's on my list. Check out Blackberry Farm at www.blackberryfarm.com. Voted best small hotel in America on a 4,200 acre luxury estate.
