Family of four vacation. Destination Outerbanks in August, 2011
First time "Fodorer" here.
I've been researching the Outerbanks area and have found I could use some advise from any experienced Outerbanks vacationers!
My family of four would like to spend a week in this area, most preferably very near/or on the water. We are beach loungers big time and are happy staring for hours into the ocean. I'm finding plenty of accommodations for large group and not much for single families. We'd like to keep it around $1000. for the week. Am I being realistic?
Once we find a place, I can imaging we'll site see to break things up, hike? bike? fly kites? fish? dine? lighthouses? historical sites? That all sounds awesome! Anything else? Any advise I would be very thankful for.

Here's a search of VRBO in Kill Devil Hills for a week in middle August -

My advice - book something via a rental agency or VRBO

Dear Newbeefamilytraveler,
Having grown up on the Outer Banks, and vacationing with my family there before that I can whole-heartedly tell you that starring out into the ocean on OBX beaches is achievable! As for doing it in style for under a $1,000 in August might be tough. There are plenty of fancy hotels as well as bare-bone motels, but during the season things are a little pricey. I recommend staying in the Nags Head area as KDH and Kitty Hawk are a little congested with traffic and shoppers. Nags Head is the southern most populated beach and the closest to Outer Banks National Seashore and home of three fantastic light houses. I recommend looking for a boutique hotel/condo on the oceanfront if you can get it. There is a great condo that is family friendly, oceanfront and next to the new NC Aquarium/Jennette's Pier called Bodie Island Resort. They can hold a family of six and even lets you bring your family pet. Plus, they are closest to the National Seashore State park. Hope that helps...

I have friends who own homes out there and they post all the time on that site. Have a great time. The Banks are so very special.

forgot to mention the resort's website is at http://bodieislandresort.com What's really cool about the place is that you get 2 bedrooms right on the oceanfront and I think they have pull out couches and allow your dog. Hope that helps!

We have stayed at some fantastic places in the OBX. They were large family places through rental agencies and VRBO you can't go wrong in OBX. A couple of years ago we stayed a little off the beaten path on Oak Island, not really OBX but we rented a 4 bedroom house (!), in the second row (people across the street were backed onto the beach) for $890. It was in July. there was not a ton to do there but we just went to the beach several times a day and went out to Bald head Island one day, the Aquarium another. We met people on the beach whose family owned a deep sea fishing charter. The next day they brought my family fish they had caught and frozen! We offered to pay but they refused. their freezer was full. It is that kind of a place. I don't think there is even a fast food restaurant there but we enjoyed the local places and cooking fish on the grill.

Great choice. OBX fabulous in August. My vote is for Hatteras Island. We have been going to the OBX for several years. We started in Kill Devil Hills, but decided on trying Hatteras and we will never go back north. Hatteras is an amazing total beach environment. We travel all over and I always go back to OBX. We are 118 days and counting. Will be spending 2 wonderful weeks. HOpefully no huricane evacuations this year. Last year we dealt with Earl!
