Extended family trip in San Juan Islands or Vancouver Island
I'm planning a 5 day west coast trip for my side of the family (3 mid-30's couples, my 65 year old parents who aren't very active, and 2 young kids). I am looking at staying either in the San Juan Islands or on Vancouver Island, probably close to Victoria. I am concerned that there may not be enough variety of activities in the San Juan Islands for everyone and it would be more expensive to stay there.
Can anyone recommend which place might be better for an extended family trip?

I don't know that I'd call five days "extended," but there is more to do on Vancouver Island than on the San Juans.
Where are you coming from and what's your plan to get there? And when is this trip?

I meant extended family, not extended trip duration.
Right now we're planning on going mid-August since that seems to work with everyone's schedule. My wife and I will be driving up from Portland, but everyone else has to fly in from the east coast.

August is the peak tourist season here. Rooms are at their most expensive all over the region.
However, the Olympic Peninsula might be a good solution. It has all the attractions of the Olympic National Park plus historic Port Townsend and a ferry that goes from Port Townsend to Whidbey Island, where Coupeville and Deception Pass are located.

With the strong US dollar, you might look at Vancouver BC as well. LOTS of things to do, places to visit, tons of activities for kids, and unlike the San Juans or Vancouver Island, you get off the plane (or off the freeway for you) and badda bing, as opposed to half a day in transit from an airport.
If you want to get out into the country, do a drive up the fabulous Sea to Sky Highway to Whistler, or take the ferry to the Sunshine Coast for an island-type experience but still on the mainland. http://www.sunshinecoastcanada.com/
