I've never stayed there -- too close to home, but it's a funky old place out of another time. I've been told the rooms smell musty and I'd be surprised if they didn't. Close your eyes and you'll see Humphrey Bogart walking the halls.
I think there are a couple of "cheap" generic motels also now, but I'd go for the genuine thing. No one would ever go to the backwoodsy Everglades City for luxury or upscale accomodations! And last time I ate there -- which has been awhile -- the food was still good.

Can't believe I forgot this. There is now a bed and breakfast there. It's called "On the Banks of the Everglades" and is in the old Everglades Bank building built in the 20's. See it at www.banksoftheeverglades.com

We've stayed at the Rod and Gun a few times. It's by no means luxurious, but our expectations were pretty much in line based on what we'd been told about the place. I wasn't expecting the Four Seasons. The building is beautiful, but well past it's prime. If you can get past this, you will probably have an OK stay. BTW the food has always been good; we've even stopped to eat at the restaurant a few times when we were passing through.
I haven't stayed at Banks of the Everglades, but did consider it. Drove by last time I was out there, and was surprised that the building was just sort of sitting by itself, kind of exposed -- no shade. Might be different by now.
This area is a great jumping off point for the Everglades -- have fun!
