Eating in San Fran on the way to Napa

If San Francisco is on the way from the San Francisco airport to Napa, where in the city could we stop for a great lunch, gourmet or otherwise? If it's not on the way, where should we eat lunch? Thanks for your help.

Yes, you can make it a point to stop for lunch in SF on your way from the airport to Napa - we did just this back in June - and we went to In & Out Burger - we are on the East coast & had never been to one! Plus it's fun to drive up & down a few of the very hilly streets while there!

I just went to San Francisco/Napa last week. We drove through Sausalito on the way to Napa. Gorgeous seaside town with beautiful view of San Francisco...quaint shops, etc. We had drinks @ Horizon Restaurant. Drinks were great, food looked good, nice atmosphere.

If it were me - I wouldn'y drive through SF/Marin to get to Napa. I would cross the Bay Bridge, eat at Skates on the Bay at the Berkeley Marina and then have a shorter drive up to Napa.

www.skatesonthebay.com/

Skates literally stands in the bay w/ a 270º view of the whole bay, masses of sail boats, all of SF, and three bridges.

The Slanted Door (Gourmet Vietnamese) at the Ferry Building. Outstanding Food, great location, great view. But make sure you have a reservation or you will wait for a seat forever. Yes it is that good.

Is Trader Vic's open for lunch? Has anyone tried their servings of Tall Grass Beef?

All the ideas you've received are good. The ferry building is a lot of fun, and there are good places to eat there. On the other hand, you really feel like you are in CA when you are dining with a great view of the bay. Tough, but nice choice you have to make.

We like to go to Sam's in Tiberon on our way to the wine country. The outdoor dining deck looks back at San Francisco and it's a beatiful sight.

Do you like sushi? The best sushi restaurant in the bay area (even got a recent Michelin rating) is Sushi Ran in Sausalito. It will knock your socks off.

Sam's would be a great stop. Parking should be ok in Tiburon and the place is right on the water. You can get casual fare(burgers etc). If you take 280(cross over to 280 via 380 from 101 N) up from the airport you drive down 19th Avenue and onto the Golden Gate Bridge. You will stay out of downtown traffic this way. PLEASE bear in mind commute hours as the drive N to the wine country no matter if you take 101 or 80 will crawl at that time.
